I have been gardening for years and I watch lots of gardening, homesteading, and farming channels on KZbin that I enjoy, but they are usually filled with information I already know. But I always learn something new when watching your videos. Your channel offers a wonderful combination of gardening information, history, beautiful vintage illustrations, and entertainment that I really enjoy. I also love antiques and vintage items and enjoy seeing the many beautiful antique/vintage items you collect and use in decorating your home. As a former owner of an advertising agency, I recognize and appreciate all the hard work and effort you put into producing such aesthetically pleasing videos, thank you.

@@suburbanhomestead what a great video. Your question at the end is a tough one... if only one of these amazing video get recommended by Google, it would probably get you as many new subscribers, as you'd get by having a gardening channel with regular updates. These high quality videos are a real treat! If you want to grow you channel "organically", I think you should make more videos where it's just you and your garden, or you and whatever interests you. I like that you cook a dish at the end... maybe share some good and bad cooking experiments with us. What I am trying to say is: I watch all your videos, because I like the person in the videos, and I think that's the case for many. p.s. My grandma had the most wonderful garden for decades in which she grew cucumbers every year to pickle (the best pickles in the world!) and this was out in North Dakota, where every winter it gets as cold as -25f and for many months sees snows as deep as 6-8 feet. It also has really hot summers, upwards of 105-110f for several months on end. I think the reason her veggies were so healthy and delicious was because the soil was really good- jet black and super soft.

This was a fun, exceptional video! I wanted to suggest alfalfa meal pellets as fertilizer to improve your cucumber yields. A 40 pound bag is about $12 at Farm supply stores, and that’s enough for several years. 3 to 5 pounds of pellets fertilizes a 100 square-foot area. The more interesting and useful aspects of alfalfa meal is that alfalfa contains a naturally occurring plant hormone which stimulates vigor and resistance in other plants. That boost could be especially useful in helping your cucumbers get ahead of cutke beetles And disease, this making the most of what your garden has to offer. While most people probably stir the pellets into the top few inches of soil as they prepare the seabed in spring, IA I do it in the fall, because I use a lazy continuous, deep mulch system. I broadcast the pellets in the fall after clearing the garden beds, then mulch my beds knee-deep with shredded leaves and grass cuttings. The mulch usually persists until July. Alfalfa meal pellets only need to be used Every other year, once per year at most. Research has demonstrated that multiple applications in a season to the same plants do not improve results. Hormones don’t work that way. Why do you leave the kale too flower the next year? I understand that bees need flowers to forage, but the kale was hogging essential real estate at your cucumbers expense. Dandelions are far more bountiful forage crop for bees, and can grow in the lawn. Also, borage is a glorious bee plant. A couple of borage plants in my garden are enough to provide a rave for bees. Lemon balm, Melissa officinalis, is also an excellent B crap, but it is an aggressive perennial and not a good fit for my small food plots.
@suburbanhomestead2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip on the alfalfa. I’ll try to find some for my other beds as well. I let the kale flower to save seeds for micro greens.

What a work of ART! From the beginning I was astonished at the richness of the video content. This was hard work and a labor of love.

absolutely fascinating. I really enjoyed the mix of history of the vegetable, the Heinz connection and also your experience. Your little animated inserts are terrific, and your use of allegory (the cat's cradle) very creative. I will watch the others you have made in this series.

Thank you. They work wonders against groundhog and deer. They've never been breached, despite the rest of the garden being attacked.

I love these videos. I can really see how much work you put into them, and it pays off. The filming, editing, animation, research and storytelling are all great. And then you're a fantastic gardener, painter and interior decorator too. Truly a polymath. It's such a gentle joy to watch you at work. Please keep it up.

I'll comment more later, but for now, I'll say I was happy to see you're still cooking, and that you managed to sneak in the cooking while still talking about gardening, so that people don't stop watching. Damn KZbin statistics and algorithms... Glad you found a way around it.
@suburbanhomestead3 жыл бұрын
I’d love to read your further feedback as well, but yes, I had to do that precisely not to lose the gardening people because of algorithm, although I may have to dial back the length in the future.

As a gardener, I find your channel a great sauce of understanding as to why I sometimes fail with certain plants and vegetables... cucumber is one of them.. Peruvian hot day weather mixed with night cold sea breeze and salty air does not help. Thank you keep the stories coming...😊

Hello Siloé, I most definitely enjoyed the video! I appreciate the time, effort and research to bring it to life. By the clips of you tending your cucumbers I could see your garden is extending and blooming just as your other garden. The previous garden was so much more developed as it happens year to year. Gardeners that video or photograph our garden can see the progress from one year to the next. I missed you! 😉💗

Love how this video started out by talking to yourself - I see myself! I'm doing two rows of hoop houses this year; a new strategy to fight off the deer. I planted Lemon Cucumber last year; it was a success... more of those this year. Thank you for including such great information in your videos.
