I am extremely confused as to how it’s even possible to not say a word in your head when you read. How in the world do you comprehend a word without saying it in your head?

For me focusing on my breathing helps me a lot in reducing it. Of course I still say the words in my head but if I don’t focus completely on the reading but partly focus on something else like my breathing it gets a lot less:)

Thank you so much for this! I’ve heard the counting out loud while you read method and it’s impossible for me to do. I am then not reading anything, just counting and looking at symbols. I tend to talk a lot faster than I read though. 😬 I have a lot of books I want to read but it takes me so much longer to get through them than other people. I’ve been trying different methods but the subvocalizing is a hard habit to break. This tool seems to work much better for me. I am definitely going to practice with this.

I can't read without my inner monologue. i see words as a visual representation of noises made by the human mouth. To read with out the inner voice is like trying to experience music by looking at an oscilloscope.

Then just forget about the sound altogether, see words as if you were a person who had never ever heard any human talk in his life

@@diegovera1353 I am not even shore what that would be like. what do words even mean with out sound? If I learned to read and write before learning to talk and listen maybe I could do it. But I was late learning to read and write.

I think I'd be throwing all of my comprehension out the window if I tried this. I usually can't comprehend what I'm reading if I read as fast as I talk, I have to slow it down and then still catch myself reading without paying attention so I have to reread a lot of paragraphs twice, or sometimes three or four times before I actually pay attention to what was said.

Does this mean that rather than not saying all words in your head, you only say like 50% of the words in the head and completely skip the rest of the words as if they didn't exist. So for example. The previous sentence is read in the head like "Does this mean not saying all words only say 50% words skip rest didn't exist". Is it possible to read the sentence without reading any single word in the head?
