Alec Tong Actually Alec you probably were not born yet but around 1983 or so, the MTA totally scrapped and removed forever only about 3 years in service the then new Grumman buses on NYC buses. Thus while not likely in a nightmare scenario, these R179s cars could also have a tragic premature ending as well. With that said in the end, the MTA will likely sue and force these Bombardier built cars ( which was recently got new owners, Alstom based in I think France)to do an almost totally rebuild. Around 1980, the MTA won a multi million dollar lawsuit against the now defunct St Louis Company that build the now long used R46s model which debuted on the subways in 1975-‘76. As part of the lawsuit and settlement before they went out of business, the St Louis Company did an almost rebuilt to then troubled and still fairly new R46s. I could be wrong but that is what’s likely for the R179s.

DAMN; SUP'M IS DEFINITELY WRONG HERE!! Why do far too many people compare the ancient to the ultra-modern?! Of course these newer systems will always be cleaner, safer, and better maintained. Plus it must be considered that the NYC system operates 25-7-365, while these others shut down for eight hours per day, stranding passengers great distances from their destinations, forcing them to use either automotive means or shoe-leather express.

Hey since everyone have smartphones or devices the transportation agencies should come up with smart rails where if a train comes decoupled without the engineer or motorman manually doing it themselves the detection system sends a signal to the tracks electronic system and stops all rail traffic on the line especially the one that the car should be connected to , it would prevent a collision by another train or prevent the passengers aboard the car from being stranded.

What happens if R179 does not return to service while it's still at the repair shop? Does it mean that r160 stay on the A line because it's doing a great Job from what I can tell.
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 4 жыл бұрын
The cars will eventually return to service, but due to ongoing reductions in service on the E, F, and R in relation to Queens Blvd and Culver CBTC as well as Kings Hwy (Culver) switch work, about 200 R160s from those lines will stay on the A, with the fleet probably slowly returning.

The MTA should have just keep the R32s until the R211 arrives. Clearly the MTA needs the R32s now since the R179s are very unpredictable and unreliable. I bet the R179 will retie after only 15 or 10 years in service. Let's also talk about the delivery delays, dorr issues & now this crap. Just retire those broken R179s. Sure the R32s have suffered a lot, BUT it's not too late to refurbish them like they did with the R42s. MTA should scrap the R179 for parts and use the R211 to fully replace the R32, R179 and half of the R46 fleet. The R68 is expected to remain in service until at least 2030.

And the Bombardiers just keep on givin' -lol!! But seriously, this incident is anything but funny. It's like Déjo-vu in the mid to late 70's with the R46s! Brand new cars from Pullman Standard riding on Rockwell International trucks that started crackin' about 2 years after they went into service. The R44/46s were among TAs worst nightmares. Somehow I think the R179s are going to be a repeat. Would not be a bit surprised if some of the R42s come back out of retirement.
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 4 жыл бұрын
The R42s are not coming out of retirement. As of now, F train service has been reduced due to switch work at Kings Hwy, meaning there is no other option for trains to short turn in Brooklyn, and the L is operating at reduced service. As of now, service on the A, C, and J/Z is being supplied by spare cars from other lines, such as the E, F, L, and R. In addition, the R42s have been the poorest performing cars in the entire fleet. The 50 remaining cars have been repeatedly taken out of service due to brake issues and other problems, and bringing them back may end up increasing the number of incidents that result in trains having to be removed from service.

We wouldn’t have these cars if the MTA didn’t retire and scrap all of R40Ms and R40 Slants with a handful of r42s and 32s back in 2008-2009. They didn’t need to be retired and so with them gone the MTA got equipment shortage now we got these lemons sidelined, the MTA is in another equipment shortage
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 4 жыл бұрын
Correction: we wouldn’t have these cars if they were made by Kawasaki. There is no excuse for not retiring cars (aside from service needs), when federal laws dictate that cars reaching 40 years of age have to be retired at one point. Therefore, the R38 and R40s needed to be retired (especially given that the fleet kept being taken out of service and were also pulled from service from Queens Blvd services). Therefore, if the R179s went to Kawasaki, none of this would’ve happened.
