Broad Channel is a station on the IND Rockaway Line of the New York City Subway, located in the neighborhood of the same name at Noel and West Roads in the borough of Queens. It is served by the A train and the Rockaway Park Shuttle at all times, the latter of which originates/terminates here.
Broad Channel originally opened in 1880 as a Long Island Railroad station. The LIRR discontinued service in 1950 after a fire on the trestle across Jamaica Bay, to the station's north. The station reopened on June 28, 1956, as a subway station.
This video is an in-depth look at the station, its history, operations, and architecture. Enjoy!

I remember being at this station once as a kid during the summer (I was goin back to Manhattan after leaving Rockaway Park); this is a station that i think needs more love, but sadly, it only has one entrance/exit & is on an island

I grew up in Rockaway. And I can tell you, you were NOT lying when you said it can get cold there in the winter. But often, I would wait with everyone else, in the overpass. I remember there's a heater that everyone used to gather around to keep warm. It's similar to the heaters found in the station in Rockaway. I always wondered if it's the same today. I also remember the old alert sign to let you know the train was coming. Used to make this buzzing sound. But all you had to do is looking all the way across in Rockaway to see the city bound train before it gets to the bridge. Speaking of that bridge. I wonder if the barges and ships going through, still have to sound the horn to communicate with the bridge operator to open the bridge. The bridge operators would always respond back with a horn as well. Ha, I'm old enough to remember that bridge being green and I think blue also.

Fantastic work! I miss riding along the Rockaways. The MTA should consider reopening the abandon exit stair area and convert it into an entrance/exit area. That way, it will draw even more passengers to experience the Rockaways and ACE (admire, care and embrace) the Rockaways for their history, their features, unique or not, and how it feels different from other islands and neighborhoods of New York City here. By the way, what’s the title/name of the song? Anyways, great work and keep it up, DJ Hammers! *We’re rooting on you to preserve the history* and to strive on helping everyone learn how New York City was back then and how it will be in the future!

Also the steel (Jamaica Bay Wall) also protects the station and row on the east facing side all the way to the North Channel Bridge heading to Howard Beach. Anyone can answer why south to the Rockaways both sides or at least one side of which goes through what is called subway island is not protected buy a wall? This island is right before the south channel bridge, looks very vulnerable.

This was my ol' stomping ground when I used to work in the Rockway's doing relief work after Hurricane Sandy. I would "occasionally" catch the "S" train from the station near my job and Broad Channel would be the next stop, then I would catch the "A" train home. Also sometimes working in the Broad Channel (rather then wait for the bus over there) I would just take the subway. It was easy access for me "lol"

S train make no point in the A line. Why can the C Line take over the S route. It will be a huge update to the C Line. Expanding the C Line from Euclid Av to Rockaway Park 116th beach St. It would be a great upgrade in my opinion.
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 3 жыл бұрын
They actually did that before. Prior to 1992, C trains ran a rather lengthy route between Bedford Park Blvd and Rockaway Park-Beach 116th Street. A shuttle provided service to the Rockaway Park branch, which has the lowest ridership than any other line in the system, with service on the C routinely experiencing delays between 145th Street and Rockaway Blvd, with eventually spilled over to other lines. To improve operations, make service more attractive, simplify confusing service patterns, and reduce transfers, A and C train service was changed. C train service was cut back to Euclid Avenue. The Rockaway Park Shuttle (former H service) now runs 24/7 between Broad Channel and Rockaway Park. All late night A service would now travel to Far Rockaway, with a shuttle between Euclid Avenue and Lefferts Blvd. Eventually, C service was moved to 168th Street from Bedford Park Blvd. this helped to reduce route length and complexity. These changes also saw a reduction of delays on the 8th Avenue Line and the rest of the system as a whole.

@@TheRailLeaguer oh. Thank you for the explanation
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 3 жыл бұрын
@Kayden D So you want service to be delayed for all riders? The 1992 service plan is more efficient. Plus the Rockaway Park Shuttle often sees low ridership except for the summer. It’s faster to just take the Q53 bus to Rockaway Blvd for A train service. How about instead of re-combining the C and the Rockaway Park Shuttle, we increase service on the Q53 bus.
@Bklynkid522
@Bklynkid522 3 жыл бұрын
Or maybe run C trains to Lefferts Boulevard and all A trains to Far Rockaway or Rockaway Park. The Rockaway Park shuttle could run late nights.
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bklynkid522 That’s less efficient that what we have now, unless new infrastructure between Manhattan and Brooklyn on the Fulton Street Line is created. This is why the 1992 service pattern still works today.
