Okay, this. This is the mark of a Civilized Culture: taking a serious day and just turning it totally silly. Just for fun, just to remind yourselves not to take yourselves _too_ seriously. This would _NEVER_ happen here in the US - people here are just waaaaaaaaaay to full of themselves. G*d bless you, you crazy Norwegians, you!

Norway's national day is the children's day. Think children's parades where all schools participate. Hot dogs, ice cream, fun activities like potato races and other silly games after the parade. The parade in my town always goes past the nursing home, so all the old and sick people can come out and watch it. That was especially important before, when there were more living survivors after the 2nd world war. Norway was occupied by the germans, and many people (including my grandparents) had to house german soldiers in their homes, and many people were on the run, towns were bombed, etc. So the war was not some distant thing for any of them. In my town, there are very few houses from before the war for that reason. Anyway, seeing the children's parade brought tears to the eyes of so many because it's what it was always about for them. Freedom and safety for the children. I'm glad they didn't have to see military parades and military vehicles driving down the street every year, but instead got to see huge children's parades waving flags and shouting hurrah!
@Subwoolferfan2 жыл бұрын
Actually the children's parade wasn't allowed until 1869 and ever after then it became more and more normal for children to walk in parades. Girls couldn't walk in the parades before 1989. Before 1869 it was called a civil parade. May 7. Wasn't said to be Norway's national day until 1936. The same year the first civil parade took place.
@JWildberry2 жыл бұрын
@@Subwoolferfan You mean girls couldn't walk in the parades before 1889, not 1989. That's a rather big difference. ;) But yes, what I'm talking about is post-WW2.

So the back story to Norway being the best country to celebrate their National Day is: Norway was a part of Denmark until 1814 when they where almost nothing, later Sweden made a union with them (Sweway) and that lasted until 1905 when they got their indapendence. But then the Nazi Germans occupied their country, and that was a long time. So the short way is that Norway had been occupied by 3 Countries: 1. Denmark, (until 1814) 2. Sweden, (a union Norway didn't really want) 3. Nazi Germany This was made by a Swede (That after this video want's to be Norwiegian) :)

were there more than one "parade" with the subwoolfers at this day?
@In_my_own_mind2 жыл бұрын
This is in front of the Royal Castle, so I guess they were only joining this. It went live on TV also. The parade pass and greets the Royal family who is standing at the balcony all day waving to the kids and people. In Oslo alone there are ten thousands of children in the parade from different schools, dressed in national costumes (bunad) etc and they walk together with a marching band from their school/area and sings and shouts «hurray». Its the same celebration throughout the country and also in Norwegian communities abroad. On the na5ional day children gets to eat as many ice cream as they want, hot dogs and soda and a lot of fun and games through the day. No military parade here. His Majesty the King's Guard is a renowned military band and drill unit in the Norwegian Armed Force. They performs precision drill together with the Royal band for people to watch. The national day celebrations in Norway is for the children (well, the adults also celebrates and have fun that day). The children parade have existed since about 1870.
