I've owned 2 FA20's to date, and I have to say the STI trans is a major aspect. I totally agree with most of what you say, but you can only build so far on the WRX trans.
@ChristianHudnell4 жыл бұрын
Exactly I agree! The best build to me is the FA platform with the STI trans
@Lunchbox_motorsports4 жыл бұрын
One of the primary reasons i went with the STI. I think between that and better brakes, it justifies the price difference.
@fabiomigotto3 жыл бұрын
@@ChristianHudnell Once you start building for big power, at present, the current FA20 DIT runs out of fueling over 500hp. At that point you will have to invest in a hybrid fueling system and a stand alone ECU like Motec. That's big bucks to solve. At that point DIT no longer an advantage and EJ has a half litre advantage in size. There will come a time, hopefully with the release of the next generation STI motor where this will be fixed and easier to upgrade without the huge cost. Motec alone is $10-15K upgrade. Until that time, bigger builds are going to be more cost effective with the current STI.
@Angrysquirel13 жыл бұрын
This came up in my recommended. I have to say, while I agree with some of your points on comfort and mileage, the bulletproof 6 speed and them Brembo's alone are worth the bit extra. I have a 13 STI Sport Tech and while it's rough on our roads (Calgary) and thirsty as hell, I didn't get this car thinking it'll be a quick Camry. I've been modding cars for a while and I've learned from much experience that eventually you'll need to stop quicker and need a trans to hold any serious power. Once you start getting power, even before the brakes and trans, you want it to transmit power to the ground = suspension. You have a beautiful car man, but I would make the same choice again and again. STI all the way. BTW - my love my temperamental EJ257 lol
@ChristianHudnell3 жыл бұрын
I agree and feel you! At the time and even now I have a track Corvette so I literally just wanted a daily but didn't want to buy a camry or something HAHAHAHA. But the STIs are another level for sure and performance it isn't even close. Congrats on your car!

@@Ieatzboltz fair, the new platform is going to be interesting. I’d say this. We have the 2.5 cracked. We know that works and what doesn’t. It depends on what you’re willing to spend at the end. This is why SubZeru just bought a STI :) WRX are known for glass transmissions. STI is better overall. Only reason to get WRX is it you're on a super tight budget and want to save a little more on gas if you'll be driving long distances. I will say you wrx guys got us on mileage 😂 love for both but after 8k miles on my sti and driving a bunch of wrxs (I work at a dealer) I have to say they both have strengths to them. Wrx is way more comfy and a better daily you can have fun in. Also, WAY easier to run 🌽! Also it doesn’t really have turbo lag due to the twin scroll turbo. Oddly enough being 23 with 3 speeding tickets it’s cheaper for me to insure an sti over the wrx (most people my age can’t swing an sti, buy a rex and then wreck it so insurance skyrockets). Also, when people say “well you have like 10k to add mods” I have a few things to say to that. 1. Most people finance, not pay cash. 2. The stock wrx trans can’t handle much power and it rides on a softer chassis. 3. The stock wrx shift feel is best put as (shout out throttle house) putting a broom handle in a bucket of rocks. You have to do a lot to remedy that. 4. The hydraulic steering rack provides so much feedback whereas the wrx electronic rack (while way more comfy and harder to upset) doesn’t provide as much feel. I think if you want to have a fun, economically sensible daily that’s fun, buy a wrx. If you want to mod your car a lot, go sti as you get way more than you think out of the box (can’t believe I didn’t mention the dccd Lmaooo). Ok now on top of ALL OF THAT, if you want to mod your car and make big power, as much as I’m head over heals for my sti, don’t buy a subie 🤣 there’s cheaper to cars with cheaper parts to make big power. Dig the video bro! Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Love both cars but ej for me and i currently just bought a 2019 sti. Did soo much research on all wrx/sti and currently subaru was sued for that problem on on the 2012-2017 wrx/sti. The 2019 and 2020 have newer rods and the 4th cylinder is better than the previous ones also short shifter. My plans in the future anyway is to get a built block eventually and my main power goal is 600hp to 650hp. People should understand that buying a performance car requires lots of maintenance and yes i already got a Aos installed for the car also a killer bee oil pan. At the end of the day everyone situation is different . But yea the wrx looking clean 👌

Great video man. I think gas is subjective depending on your commute for work, especially with everyone teleworking. As an STI owner I will hands down admit the FA20 makes power super easy compared to an STI up til 400whp, after that though, both are gonna cost a pretty penny to get power out of and the WRX is limited fuel wise.

The added suspension upgrades of the sti were irrelevant to me as I'm gonna mod the suspension anyhow (also my profile pic is my old autox/daily lol) and 30hp isn't worth an extra $10k to me

I just did the same, picked up a bugeye wagon with a JDM engine swap, fun car been looking art newer WRXs since, this video might've change wanting an STI over the WRX, mainly because ill be daily driving it, plus the faster I can get to buying upgrades the better, also to mention saving a bunch on Insuance, I think if I wanted to build a car I don't daily then id go with an STI. Will more then likely own both before its all said and done, dream subies would be to daily a newer WRX and find a STI Hawkeye as a project. @AlDim0004 жыл бұрын
The EJ257 is not a strong engine (except for the latest revision which finally got upgraded internals), but same goes for the FA20DIT as it has some very weak internals. Honestly, both are pathetic for making good reliable power without major investments compared to the competition. The FA20 certainly has much better fuel economy though, that much is true. No matter how much money you put into a WRX, it still has a sub-par 6-speed transmission that has had major reliability problems, especially on earlier current gen WRX models. It's weak, it has a bad shifting feel, and a vague clutch. Also, open diffs with brake vectoring suck. At the end of the day you get a WRX for the lower price and better fuel economy and an STI for everything else.
@ChristianHudnell4 жыл бұрын
Yeah pretty much I agree! I actually believe these cars aren't meant to be built heavily honestly. These cars should have a few things get to 350-400 and call it a day before heavy spending. At that point may as well buy a different car and have a better platform. Thanks for comment, I agree

I bought the STI because I have bigger plans for it. $10k seems like a lot but when you look at upgrading the components that get skipped with the WRX (steering rack, trans, differentials, etc), you don't end up saving anything. Completely agree with your overall sentiment though, WRX is a great fun daily. If you just want something to add a bit of pep to then WRX all day. But I care too much about how the car feels. And if you are someone who really cares about that too then you're gonna want the STI. But really just go drive them and see if it matters to YOU!

Yeah, I agree with this. I've got about 13k in my WRX and can't push much more than 450ish because the transmission is going to explode. What's more, my wrx brakes are absolute trash. I've driven both and I'd take the STI over the WRX every day of the week for many reasons. Also to get an STI to 450-500WHP its like 10k-15k which really isn't that bad. If money isn’t an issue then all these reasons are irrelevant, I got an STI because I still have money to mod and I don’t care about gas price’s, 99% of wrx owners reason to not getting an STI is simply because they can’t afford one especially if your going to make a video about how a wrx save you money in every way over a STI

I hope the FA or FB what ever the name they're using in the STI has the major design flaws worked out before they drop one in the STI.
