Can you use air plants on the pumpkins?

You bet your bottom dollar you can! They nicely add height and different textures to the mix.

I love this idea but I think I may try to create a "living" arrangement in a shallow pot/bowl and carve out the top of the pumpkin to fit the pot so the plants can actually grow. (I'm in Zone 10 so the plants won't freeze.) I don't think I can bear to put hot glue on my baby succulent cuttings. 😧

It's counterintuitive, but cutting into the pumpkin and planting succulents in it with soil is a very quick way to rot both the pumpkin and the succulents. I promise, hot glued succulents are simple to cut off at the end of the season and re-root. They're the masters of vegetative propagation! They go into a bit of dormant stasis while on the pumpkin as cuttings, but spring back to life once they're pulled / cut off and planted in a well draining pot + soil.

This was just what I needed to watch to encourage me to try this, thank you! I guess succulents aren’t bothered by hot glue.

Isn't that wild about hot glue? Such troopers.

Yeah, those plants are toast. There’s no way they’re coming back- no water, way overcrowded, and even when the roots grow in a last ditch effort to live- there’s no soil or substrate. (That’s if the roots find someplace that isn’t covered in glue). It’s a cute idea, and IMO an interesting alternative to the classic wedding flowers. But let’s not waste other’s time and say that any of those plants live. I want proof of life- by October 31st on a dated pumpkin. Otherwise we can all assume that rot or some other unfortunately business condemned those succulent cuttings.

No, they will be fine. Succulents can be ok without water for weeks, specially if they are not expose to heavy sun. And for replanting silicon glue doesn't adhere that great in the long run, or you can cut the stem and let it regrow roots (Yes they will have small roots) they are incredible and sturdy plants.!!

@@anamora9523 Fair. I agree that once the arrangement is disassembled the majority of the succulents will be fine. But as is, I’d give them 3 months tops in bright indirect light max.

@@jacobleecock9440 I did succulent pumpkins last year and just found a pic dated feb 6 with succulents still doing well.they only got watered when it rained as I left them outside, many grew roots.happy to share a pic.

Totally agree with the other responses. I should clarify, the idea isn't that these succulents are growing and rooting while they're on the pumpkin. Their growth naturally slows down during winter which makes them even better at holding stasis for several months without soil or much water. Provided, as you said, that the pumpkin is in bright light. Come the new year, I take cuttings from the pumpkin and re-root them in normal conditions.
