I have 3 different types of grow lights. Used them on my plants all winter. I had neighbors ask me what I was "growing in the spare bedroom". lol They saved my succulents this winter in LA. I started using 24 hours, but when I saw one of your videos, I did only 8 to 12 hours a day. They grew a lot better that way.

Temu is finally where I found A shocking variety. ( Read the measurements carefully and if you decide to get Strip lighting for like A three-tier shelving unit make sure you know what kind of plug your getting. Some plug in but MANY have the same whatever it's called like for A phone charger. ) They also sell cheap though. I live in the Desert and water is about as expensive as A midgrade gasoline. Indoors is hopefully going to let me still enjoy indoor growing. (I have very low water items planted but they do occasionally require A little water.

The blurple lights aren't inherently bad. I know people who use them and they've worked. My experience is just that white lights are often brighter and cheaper for a similar setup. If yours is working, I wouldn't switch. You could also try leaving them on longer or moving them closer to the plants.

I actually was just researching the affects of specific color spectrum on plant growth. The reason why the blue and red lights don't work as well as full-spectrum bulbs/light is down to several factors. However, a big one that you somewhat touched on is that blue and red grow lights are lacking in the green light spectrum. It turns out while blue and red lights are readily absorbed by the plant's chlorophyll (thus spawning the huge menagerie of "blurples" in the indoor plant community), green light is also important in photosynthesis. Previously, it was thought to not be very important for plant growth/health due to the fact that the plant would, well, reflect some of the green spectrum back (what we see is what light is reflected back at us so this is why plants appear green to us) . It turns out the green light spectrum is also very important in photosynthesis, particularly when it comes to the lower leaves (because it isn't as readily absorbed as red and blue lights, light in the green spectrum aren't as readily stopped/absorbed by the upper leaves of the plant and are able to "travel" to the lower leaves where they can continue to be partially absorbed by the plant to continue on its merry photosynthesizing way). Basically, green light is necessary for increased photosynthesis efficiency....I think it may also play a role in the efficiency of the plant's gas exchange but can't remember. Then there are other factors (UV lighting, far-red light, and I'm sure a multitude of other things we are only just learning about). Basically, white light for growing= a more well-rounded diet for the plant whereas "blurple" light= putting your plant on a diet by taking away an entire food group. ETA: A better example than food/diet is probably something like being locked in one room all the time, even with all your survival necessities, and being able to freely come and go as you wish. You can survive being locked in one room because your most basic needs are still being met but you aren't going to thrive and are generally going to be happier if you can come and go as you please. Also, the reason for the stretching in plants under the "blurples" (which I love) is likely due to the imbalanced light spectrum being offered to the plant--more specifically, the red light spectrum .

Quite probably you were getting funky colors and weird growth with blurple lights because they need too much blue light to get to sufficient light levels. Blue light for one is the most "aggressive", therefore increased light stress coloration, and secondly has quite an impact on photomorphogenesis, therefore strange growth. Red light might have an impact on that as well depending on species. Especially succulents with their nice thick and fleshy leaves can make very good use of green light, so at appropriate light levels there's a less exaggerated amount of red & blue. Green light might actually have effects on succulents and cacti it doesn't have on most other thin leaved plants, but I'm still far from having a conclusive opinion and any idea of the underlying cause, so I won't go into detail and risk spreading bs. Anyway - if it's just supplemental it won't matter much which light color you choose, but if it's almost exclusively artificial lighting I'd recommend a lower color temperature. Around 3500-4000K/neutral white seems to be pretty ideal, the higher color temperature "daylight" leds unfortunately have a spectrum that's far from actual daylight and reach their high color temperature rating by a huge spike at 450nm/blue and low red. In nature the blue light is spread out continuously from somewhere around 425-525nm, but common LEDs have what's called the "cyan gap", with very little to almost no light emitted between the 450nm "royal blue" spike and the green wavelengths. This makes them more aggressive for plants even though they got roughly the same color temperature as daylight. Using a 3500-4000K light mitigates that somewhat, usually by having still plenty of blue light but substituting some of it with green and yellow (and maybe a pinch of red) which is way more gentle for plants. If you want to get something that's actually daylight-like I can recommend "Fluxstrips" in the HiCri version (not affiliated in any way, just a very satisfied customer) with bridgelux "Thrive" chips (or anything else with 5000K blx throve chips on it of course). In 5000K they actually come extremely close to real daylight, alas at the cost of efficiency and not being plug & play but very easily diy-able. They're still way more efficient than those common lower priced led lamps and bulbs, but quite a bit behind compared to other high quality/professional/semi-professional solutions usually using Samsung chips with conventional led spectrum including the cyan gap. Maybe someone finds it informative, just noticed the video is already 2 years old - not 2 days 🤦‍♂️

Very good advice. Lumens, not watts. Lumens measures the total light power from the bulb, so you might get different results if the bulbs have different directivities. A long bulb and a spherical bulb will give different results. What really matters is lux, the power per unit area at the plant level. That will depend on distance from the light. That is the measure we should be using. Lux and lumens are 2 different measures!
@Succulentsandsunshine
@Succulentsandsunshine 3 жыл бұрын
Thank for for the info! We have noticed many lights don't list lux or even the lumens sometimes. It sure would be nice if they were more consistent 🙂
@DavidMFChapman
@DavidMFChapman 3 жыл бұрын
@@Succulentsandsunshine the lamps should be labelled with lumens, as that is intrinsic to the lamp. Lux is the light intensity at the soil level, so it would depend on the installation and the distance between the lamp and the soil, so it is not intrinsic to the lamp. We should be specifying light intensity (lux) at the plant. You can get simple apps to measure that.

Hi, I'm trying to top-light a single enormous euphorbia ingens (succulent) in a south-facing window. I have one pendant 30W 6500K 2550 lumens LED T bulb, which I am thinking of replacing with one 55W 6400K 3150 lumens LED CF. Losing 100K for an extra >20% seems a good trade, but I'm not sure. Combining two 6500K lamps is difficult (two 30W lamps or one 30W and one 20W) because beam angles necessitate wide reflectors.
@Succulentsandsunshine
@Succulentsandsunshine 9 күн бұрын
That sounds like it should work! I've learned lately that the Kelvin (color rating) of a light doesn't necessarily impact the spectrum. I would definitely focus more on the lumens and brightness instead.
@andnowi
@andnowi 9 күн бұрын
@@Succulentsandsunshine yes, that's weird ... the spectrum may not be affected by the kelvin (colour temperature) ... 🤔🤔🤔 ... so what should we be looking at? There is only so much info on a typical light. Should we just admit our ignorance and blindly shell out for grow lights?????

I personally just use regular white LEDs. You can definitely get more complicated with lights and grow lights, but so far my plants have done well with the lights on this list: www.amazon.com/shop/succulentsandsunshine/list/19ODR5PWMPI0H?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_list_d

@Succulentsandsunshine
@Succulentsandsunshine 3 ай бұрын
I would do blurple as it's likely more light overall for the plant. Brightness is a critical part of grow lights working well.

Whatever is most convenient. For me, changing the time is easiest since my lights are attached to the shelves. But my next step would be to put the succulents up on a block to get them closer to the light.

So far I have like two A type ladders in it facing each other. It gives me a big bottom and small shelves going up the sides. I have plants on different tiers and some are actually under the shelves alitte. Should I dim the light at all or run it at 100%? The top plants would be closer to the light. My girlfriend has so many I have no idea what level they should be on. I guess I just need any help possible. She does the watering but I want to make the optimal conditions for her tent. I just need help. Thanks for anyone replying.

High humidity is not great for succulents, as it doesn't allow the soil to dry out as quickly as it should. Here's a quick post on heat and humidity for succulents: succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-humidity

Does anyone by chance know what kind of grow lights work for african violets? I bought those purple lights from Amazon because the reviews were so high and some reviewers claimed they worked for the african violets, but they aren't working for me. I will be returning those lights. I know they need bright indirect light so that their leaves don't burn.

Grow lights are so much easier and cheaper than the old days when only metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps worked. They were expensive and ran your light bill so high that it just wasn't practical. I just use the LED lights that I can afford at the time that I decide I need more, and the panels and clip-on bunny ears types have worked fine for me.

I bought an led red blue white clip on grow light. I like it because it has a timer setting. I noticed I have to place it super close to my murasaki succulent or it will stretch. Everybody else is happy though! My sop and sod do well and everybody else is good do have to place it close to the murasaki like 2 inches away. It doesn't burn anyone else and they do great. That being said I still have them by a window so they do get some direct light, its just not that bright thats why I took out my led to help. Other windows in the house get loads of light but not in my room.
