Sorry to comment after two months. There wasn't any real information as to why or how long they lived apart and I don't really know the school system in Thailand, but I think Alpha moved with her mother to Bangkok when she started high school (so almost 3 years ago) and her father probably stayed with Ongsa in Phuket because of work and because they didn't want Ongsa to change schools before high school. At least that could be the time frame if it's the 6 elementary, 3 middle, 3 high school year system they have in Japan. I also absolutely think the same way you do about their family relationship, but Ongsa's problem is probably mostly because she can't deal with "pushy", for a lack of a better word, people like mother, even if her mother doesn't know or realize that she's pushing. You can also see it in this episode when Ongsa and Sun were standing at the gate, the mother comes out and almost the first thing she says is "Sun, are you ok? Ongsa, what did you do" instead of "are you two ok" or something. It was the same in my house until I moved out when I was 21 and I absolutely couldn't deal with my mom when she was in one of her "you should(n't), can't, have to" phases and was always asking questions like "tell me what happened" or "what will you do if". Alpha's way more stable and strong, so she doesn't have a problem with that, but Ongsa needs someone like her father who's more of the "you don't have to", "you're welcome to", "when you're ready" and "if you want to" type. She completely shuts off if someone tries to "push" her into giving information or behaving the way they want her to before she herself is ready to say or do it. But the biggest problem, and that's not a family problem, is that Ongsa always assumes the worst of what other people think or how they will react, so she instinctively tries to avoid that problem, especially if it wouldn't be her own ("if ..., then Sun would have a hard time", "what will people say about Sun if ...", etc) .

My interpretation of Onga's family situation is this: Alpha seems a lot more close to her mother then Ongsa, and Ongsa seems a lot more close to her father then Alpha (their mother in the first episode pressures Alpha to help Ongsa, while their dad pressures Ongsa to try to make some friends and not to be as she was in Phuket). Also, when their parents talked about Ongsa in the first episode, their mother was worried about Ongsa's studies and their father, who seem to understand Ongsa better (as if he lived with her all this time), was more worried about Ongsa's social life, and he said so as if their mother wouldn't know about it. I guess that, when they were little, they all lived together in Phuket, but at some point Alpha and their mom moved to Bangkok because they had better schools there and Alpha wanted to be a doctor, and Ongsa stayed with their father (maybe because their father had to stay in Phuket for work or something). That's probably why Alpha was already in the student committee in the beginning of the series and knew everyone a little bit more. Also, that would explain the whole Ongsa situation with Ton because they said that she was there to be with her family for some kind of holiday and then had to go back to Phuket (and they do not metion Alhpa going back to Phuket with Ongsa). So I think maybe at the beginning of the series her and their dad finally got to move to Bangkok and live together (Ongsa mentions that "they finally got to live together again" when talking to Sun about going to the USA last episode). And that would also explain why in the beginning of the series we only see Ongsa moving in and not the rest of her family, and Alpha is already there, looking more comfortable in their house, as if she hadn't move to Bangkok with Ongsa (Alpha also already knew where Ongsa class was in the first episode and was familiar with the school). Plus, with Ailyn, I think she moved in to live with their cousins at some point before Ongsa came in but not much more longer before, probably because in Thai culture is common to send your daughter or son to live with someone from your family for a while to let them learn new things and adjust to a new environment (also, with Ailyn's problems of socialization, maybe her family was also hoping that she would get better living with girls her age). Ailyn being there before Ongsa would also explain why her room in the first episode was already set and why Alpha was already familiar with how Ailyn functions (with the whole comment about "not wanting to communicate with her" and asking Ongsa to do it, and the comment about Ailyn pretending to be an alien). I think Ongsa is afraid of her mom because she didn't grow up living with her and also you can kinda see throughout the series that their mom seems to be very strict and pushy (as in a "I want my daughters to be perfect and act perfect" situation, and that's probably why Alpha has this mentality since she is the one that got to live with their mother).
