When i was a child, my dad brought me on a fishing trip to a dam. We got on a boat and traveled to these really tall tunnels. Inside those tunnels was extremely turbulent water, i asked my dad why the water was so violent, and he told me it was turbines.. at the time, i didn't know what a turbine was, or even what a hydroelectric dam was for that matter. But we got really close to those turbines, enough for the boat to start swaying from the turbulence. I started to get scared, so i asked my dad what would happen if i fell in, and he said I'd get sucked and chopped up. I thought i was having a come to Jesus meeting that night. Later, we moved spots to another portion of the dam, and my dad shined his light in the water, and i saw a fish. It was long, like an eel.. but it wasn't an eel. I asked my dad what it was, and he said it was an alligator gar, a nasty looking fish with sharp teeth. After i witnessed that fish, i stood up to reposition my seating, and the boat rocked, making me partially lose my balance. Heart attack? No. Adrenaline rush? Maybe. I obtained the grip strength of 5 gorillas and an angry momma bear after i flopped back on my seat, and only let go after 10 miles out of the 7 mile trip back to our house. Needless to say, a deep-seated fear was born in me that day

PADI open water and gas mix/technical diving does not guarantee that you can't come up with absolutely braindead ideas such as exploring near a dam. It's so stupid and common sense. My guess is that they gotover confident with their CCR gear and scooters and thought they could explore wherever and solve any problems they may encounter since you could basically be undrwater for 6 hours with CCR.

What should be installed is a large metal cage in front of the inlet pipe. This would limit the max pressure on any diver that would venture too close, thus allowing them to escape. As others here have stated, the turbines were not switched on, but the flood gates were opened allowing water to flow through the turbines.

Thanks for the video. Absolutely not sad for people going voluntarily into danger zones. There is a dam, if the gate opens, then with pressure of water, turbines start to rotate, you are doomed. How can you go near a dam? Rather you are stupid or willing to die. It is sad, but sorry, I have no sad feeling for those two. There are rules. There is a dam. It can start at ANY moment. If the gate opens, the force of the current is so high, you cannot escape it. Even with a grid, you would be stucked, without possibility to move due to the huge force of the water. So it is either you are cut in many peaces by the turbine or if there is a grid, stucked on it and you drown. Those two chose to put the rules on the side and go deep and close to the dam, maybe even to examine it. They die stupidly. It is your life. You choose to do something stupid and highly dangerous. You jeopardize your life for a dive with a dam that can start at any moment and suck you through. Your choice.

Suicidal maniacs who played 'roulette' with their lives, and lost. Sorry to sound brutal, but not much more to say really. Everything they did was wrong. Disobeying signs and safety instructions, diving after dark, diving in the winter months when the water is at its coldest. They broke every single rule, because they arrogantly thought they were too experienced to bother having to follow them. Safety signs exist for a reason! They're not put up to stop people having fun, but to ensure their safety, and (hopefully) prevent deaths.
@williamwalker810714 сағат бұрын
The turbines being switched on probably means that a valve or gate that lets the water flow from the water in the dam out through the turbines was activated and the area around the intake now had a high flow rate in to it. The divers in that area, at night, didn't know how close they were to the intake. When flow into the turbines started it was unexpected. They should not have been there.

A wise man once said. The great thing about diving in dangerous places is that you never actually have to do it.

were those divers even instructed on how the dam worked?
@jwhite03986 күн бұрын
They may have been good swimmers, but there was no way of escaping those turbines; I fail to understand how that man's son could remain optimistic after seeing the damaged equipment.

Those Delta P’s man! some scary shit. I first learned about it on the coverage of the tube disaster in Trinidad and Tobago. So I immediately knew what he was going to say.

Raise your hand if your in Search & Rescue and can’t count the number of times you’ve had to go after someone who was “Very Experienced” It’s always those ones that cause the most headaches 😂

Turbines aren't switched on. They're spun by moving water.

In the end run how much of a tragedy is it when the divers broke the law by going deeper than 20 meters. No pun intended but sucks to be them

Not replacing the grates on the intake tunnels was dumb, just as dumb as the decision made by the two men to dive near the intake tunnels.
@jpcabingan6 күн бұрын
They are dumb. Stop pointing fingers. Nobody will be sucked in if there are no divers
@pieterveenders97935 күн бұрын
As mentioned, grates on the intakes wouldn't have made any difference. The inflow is so insanely strong that they would have been sucked up against the grates completely unable to move, and would have remained in place till they drowned, only to be released once the dam shuts off.

gates needed to be replaced every two months. that's stupid and dangerous. the longer you play chicken, the sooner you will lose.
@babadagaa8352Күн бұрын
@@pieterveenders9793not the case. If there had been a grate he could have crawled off the side and once you are out of the funnel you can get away if you keep your surface area small. Grate maintenance is a constant issue though if there is debris In the water. Would not need replacing every two months.

Idk if there is a term for it, but I have this irrational fear of anything that sucks too hard. Turbine inlets, black holes, my ex. Terrifying.
@pimmelschilz97284 сағат бұрын
The Turbine does not generate electricity. It powers the Generator, which generates electricity.

Having recreational dive areas in the immediate area of a hydro generating station intake is probably the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

'Safety' grids don't matter much anyway. You just get pressed to the grid with the entire weight of the lake until you drown.
