It was in the early 90ies, when I saw Suede on MTV for the first time. There were so much brilliant bands around at this time, but they were somehow something special. Never thought I would see them 30 years later and they would still be so magnificent.

Patti Smith's 'Because the Night' is one of those songs on my list of songs that should never be covered. Or so I thought until I turned the radio on this afternoon and heard this version. The song was about 1 minute in, so I didn't immediately know who was singing. But right away I knew it was special, and turned my full attention to the radio. I began to think of Suede and how Brett's voice could probably do it justice, but wasn't sure it was him. I remembered a time Suede performed Brass in Pocket, before they were popular really, and I was blown away by it. The unique quality of Brett's voice is etched in my memory of this rendition, and although there were parallels I couldn't be certain. I was actually relieved and delighted when the song was credited at the end. Relieved because it just had to be Suede, and delighted because they've still got it. Huge respect to Richard Oakes and Mat Osman on guitar and bass also - they are such a big part of the Suede sound and perfect for this song. Not forgetting Simon Gilbert on drums of course, visible briefly on this video. What a line-up! Thanks to the BBC Concert Orchestra for making this possible. I still love my original Patti Smith vinyl copy though!
