Classic album. Such an incredibly moving, if heartbreaking, track penned by Brett over lunch when he worked at a community center in Highgate. According to Brett, "mothers would trundle in with their handicapped kids, and their mascara would be running because they'd spent the whole morning crying, and the only escape they had was to get a load of Valium down them."

Back in 1998 my mother took an overdose of sleeping pills and died. Part of the lyrics I wrote on a note and put with her in her grave. Special sad memories.

i wonder if people give bernard the credit he is due, the way i see it is that suede in that carnation were special, the musicianship on the first and second albums is delightful, they gelled, now im not anti-brett because the melodrama is the key to suede, it would not have worked otherwise but i feel that bernard was the driving force and the key to those absolute classics on the debut, he is a fine musician and im sure his childhood idol j. marr might agree!!!
