I was in the crowd for this, the reason why it appears quite dark is it was in the John Peel stage undercover & was quite dark at the time (this was about 23:30pm at night). The sound is a bit to be desired in the video, but the set was immense, was an honour to be there for The Beautiful Ones.

Suede smashed this set. I was concerned before watching it would be another one where a band from the past shows itself to be a has-been, but I was really, really impressed. Long may it continue! Wish the full set were on KZbin somewhere :-/

@@MrLaizard People should stop with "underated comments" they don't really reflect the reality of what the general public really like. It's like trying to say John Lennon was never famous. UK in general are an Indie/Rock n roll nation. Media are trying to force us to like a lot of rubbish. I find this oppressive and unrealistic. Want to know what British people like to listen to ? Just go to any pub. 😄

I am Serbian. In the nineties, during the war in Yugoslavia, we used to listen both grunge and Britpop. I preferred grunge, those were really the kings of that time - Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Hole and Alice in Chains. Of Britpop, I admired Suede and Radiohead. When I look back at that time, I know now that I criminally underestimated one band - Pulp. They had heart.

@@purelight6663 This is correct and a worthwhile discussion to have. Going back to the '70s there's been an "oversupply" of artists to follow. Prior to that, in the US, on Sunday nights everyone watched things like the Ed Sullivan show, which was discussed the following Monday at work. This is what made the Beatles and Stones possible. At a certain point you had the Ramones, the Cars, Talking Heads, and Black Sabbath happening all at once. People liked one, some, or all of them. In my high school there was a distinct schism between people who liked Led Zeppelin and those who favored the Grateful Dead. Eventually people started dressing as hippies or metal heads depending on the music they favored; this was an evolution that started in the '50s. By the time Nirvana came around the disco years had evolved into the hip-hop/graffiti era. The word "alternative" was originally coined to mean "everything else"; today it means something very specific. And because of the style of delivery and discovery today there are more "genres" than you can count - even within "dance" music or "rap" music. "Techno" was there, long before it had a name. Many indy record companies sprang up, sometimes with a roster of just one band, and it became ultra cool to like a band just because they were obscure and unknown. Record companies pursued their goals, the internet came into every home, nothing went as planned and we wound up with what we have today. I heard Suede on the radio once. I'm a big fan of Sparks, and never heard them on the radio in all these years. Lady Gaga was huge before I'd even heard any of her music. I heard Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" the minute it came out (they promoted it as the first free internet release), I said "that's a hit". That song had something for everyone. I think that the UK was much more accustomed to "fads" in music early on, like early Beatles days; and not long after that the same thing evolved here in NYC, which being just "across the pond" was always the first and last stop on any Brit band's US tour. At one time they probably had only the choice of flights to JFK to get in and out of the country. When I first heard Bowie I thought, "this is kinda gay"; but look what he went on to do. I think the important thing is to give everything a chance and demand quality. Listen to the music and ignore the marketing, clothes and makeup. When you're reading about who an artist is dating, or what designer they're wearing, that's not about music, which is supposed to be about emotion, passion, expressing and sharing what we all have in common. In the highly unlikely event that something like the Beatles happens again, it'll happen organically because the music is good and pushes people's buttons. It's not something desired by those who prefer to keep the population divided but, as seen in the days of the Beatles, good music is a force that can't be stopped. We can only hope the "next big thing" comes to us with a positive, inspiring message other than "buy this toothpaste". Beware of poseurs.
