Owen, I met people who adjusted their views towards gay people in the past decades, from disliking gay people to understanding gay people as part of societal life. Yeah, it's right out of the twisted Steve Bannon/Dominic Cummings playbook - they trialled it with Priti Patel assuming the white liberal elite journalist class wouldn't dare call a woman of colour a racist, even if she said everything that got Enoch Powell thrown out of the Tories in the 80s... and like a lot of things, they were correct. Sad to say a lot of disgusting fascists are extremely prescient when it comes to mass communications, far more so than the smug arrogance of the middle class political editors at "grown up" publications like The New Statesman or The Economist.

Hi Owen as a retired Police Inspector having served 30 years with a big metropolitan force like GMP I have seen an alarming rise in the alignment of police leadership with political narratives and the demise of the independence of individual Chief Officers. I’ve no doubt that much of this can be attributed to the introduction of single “elected” Policing and Crime Commissioners all of whom campaign with a party political identity. I’d be very interested to hear what Andy Burnham has to say about the ejection of this individual at the hands of zealous security staff enthusiastically assisted by a GMP Chief Inspector (almost certainly a silver or bronze commander for the event). For an officer of this rank to be seen to act so swiftly in such benign circumstances serves only to illustrate that a zero tolerance to dissent policy has been agreed at the strategic level by police Gold Command (ACC,DCC or Chief Const). I wonder what level of policy consultation took place with the Deputy Metro Mayor responsible for policing took place! 10:36

@@johnburrows3385 Agreed. She instigated the idea, along with Reagan, of neoliberal financial policies that have harmed social cohesion and rewarded the rapacious while at the same time depressing the living standards of the majority. She it was who opened the Pandora's box that now has granted corporations more say in the running of the country than the so-called democracy which is a distant runner up. If she were here, would even she be ashamed at what she unleashed, or would she regard Truss as her rightful heir?

Owen, if you see this please, please, PLEASE realise that there are innumerable Boomers, like me, who are as distressed and deeply unsettled as your generation about the chilling developments in our still beautiful, but hurting, country. I listen loyally to your broadcasts and those of Novara and am saddened that bright, passionate people like you and the Novara folk look on us as a bunch of privileged Archers-listening, numptie pariahs. Please start noticing us as worthwhile allies and invite us in to become involved in your message. We really do care and we really do mind what's happening.
@OwenJonesTalks Жыл бұрын
I genuinely don't think this - my politics are in large part influenced by my boomer parents! It's just an objective fact that there is a massive age divide in politics. In 2019, 14% of the over 70s voted Labour, compared to 67% for the Tories, while 22% of 60 to 69 year olds voted Labour, compared to 57% for the Tories, while 56% of 18 to 24 year olds voted Labour, compared to 21% for the Tories. So of course there are brilliant left-wing older Britons - it's just that the overall age divide can't be ignored when we're talking about politics.

I'm another boomer and have been Labour all my life. I voted remain, fought for the environment since a teenager and tell the kids to vote in local and general elections, even mayoral, everything they can to make a difference. But I don't bother writing to my MP anymore. There really is no point - it's bloody Rees Mogg!

When I saw (on another YT channel) parts of this appalling speech, I was greatly disturbed as a member of one the communities being vilified. Thank you for providing a more sane exegesis - it's reassuring. This demonstrates how much the Labour party is wrong over press and voting reform - these two items are the only way to keep this kind of vile politics out of power.

I am a retired police officer and I know that people can be ejected from meetings as there are laws to cover this but this is not a public meeting and I cannot for the life of me come up with an offence of heckling in a private conference. This man was detained by what looked like government thugs with the aid of the police very frightening and bizarre.

She’s playing a dangerous game, it starts with this sort of rhetoric which she is driving on to introduce and before she knows it, she’s not quite right enough for the far right and ends up becoming a victim of her own orchestra.

No they've always been right-wing and often deeply unpleasant and cruel. But you can be all those things without being a hardright party. I would not have accused Thatcher's Tories of being a hard right or an ultraright part. Nor would I have dreamt of voting for her. As I was about 12 when she left office, it wasn't an issue. But no, they haven't always been hard right. The fact that there is serious talk of Nigel Farage getting to be an MP and becoming their leader speaks volumes.

It amazes me how people continue to ignore Indian racism. This isn't a bug, this is a feature. Indians in the west are racist, they'd be BJP members in India. And notice how her and her family are exempt from the negative views she assigns to other immigrants. Its the same bigotry espoused by Ramaswamy and Healy in the US.
