We (his fans) may not be the biggest crowd in the world but we love to show Louis that we are here for him just as he has been there for a lot of fans. And we know he never got the promo we think the album deserved so his fans started a project with this song just a couple of days ago and suddenly it climbed itunes charts all over the world. And it's not a single. Just an album track. While the song obviously meant a lot to him, to be so open on it, he was surprised by fans instant love for the song after the first time he performed it live and that was before he had released the album. So yes, it's a fan favorite no matter how you interpret it. Needless to say perhaps but Louis was really taken aback and amazed by it all. Thank you for reacting to this song and for your review and thoughts on it. As always I feel you're spot on.

Louis has different people for harmonies I'm so proud of this song for getting number #1, we did so great. We are such a dedicated fandom. Also I'm such a huge fan of this song live more then audio. yeah you're right, it's about having relationship problems and the other person being proud and trying to hide or protect themselves from the pain it may cause them, communication problems and stuff while he says he is completely vulnerable and just wants to be loved by them no matter what, work on their problems and deal with them but the other person is creating a wall in their defense to protect both of them, he on the album is completely honest and counts all the highs and lows, you will have to listen to the whole album to understand more, I really liked your reaction, this is one of my favorite songs on the album and I would love for the next one to be only the brave! :) x

i agree, it seems like the other person is not reciprocating and there seems to have been communication issues in the relationship. louis described this song as a cry for help, and this is reflected especially in the opening line of the song, "i come running to you like a moth into a flame." moths are attracted to light and flames and lightbulbs but they die once they crash into them. you can tell that he was in a very toxic relationship and it was hard for him to finally leave that person behind (wish i didn't need so much of you - he knew that person was bad for him). but then the song that comes right after defenceless on the album ends the album with "it's a solo song and it's only for the brave" meaning he finally had the courage to leave and be on his own.

I think you are right when you say he 's completely honest in this song, he tries to show to his partner how much he loves him, and how he is defenceless, not trying to play a game, or be the one who has the power in the relationship, and yes he really wants to be loved by his partner. But I'm not sure you are right when you say that the partner is not reciprocating, because I think the key to understand this song this song is in these words: "You don't have to keep being strong for you and me/ Acting like you feel no pain, you know I know you do" . So it means the partner has suffered in the past, because of Louis, and Louis knows that the partner is still suffering and tries to hide it, by being distant and strong, as if he didn't care so much, but even if they sleep together, "the problems in the morning are still under the sheets" "). In my opinion the only way to explain that song is to understand that he 's speaking to the one who always loved Louis: he speaks to Harry Styles, who, ad a certain point, for some reasons (to long to explain here) lost Louis, Louis run away from him. Harry suffered a lot (you can see that pain when Harry sang the songs he wrotes for Louis, sometimes he even cried on stage. So when Louis returned to him after 2 or 3 years, Harry was (as he said in "Golden") "Hopeless, broken", probably terrified by the possibilty to cherish any illusions, to suffer again (in Golden: "because hearts get broken"), or to show to much love and make louis walk away again ... So he was probably a bit paralized, very careful, perhaps a bit distant, trying to "be strong for him and Louis" , perhaps "lost in his pride" (he showed his love in so many songs for years, and expressed his pain, his need of him, with an open heart, a broken heart, so now it's difficult for him to be confident, trusting). So when you say that the partner is not reciprocating, it's not exactly the truth, it's more complicate. To understand almost all the songs in Tomlinson album, I think it's essential to know the story of their relationship and to listen also Harry's songs, because for years they have used their songs as a written and encrypted correspondance between them. The songs are an expression of their feelings, and a way to tell eachother what they coudn't say when they were apart. In fact Harry and Louis told in interviews exactly that : their songs are written for someone, for one person, and are "a wonderful way to comunicate with him" (Harry Styles's quote for his own songs). The same reading grid is useful to understand "Walls" / "Too Young" / "Habit" / "Always you" , "Fearless" /"Kill my mind" / "We made it" (and yes they did!) and "only the brave", because Louis needs a lot of courage to show his love for Harry with such an open and sincere heart. If you are not convinced try to find on KZbin what Fan art design Louis has chosen to his songs backgrounds on Spotify: the most importants are the exact drawing of Harry's Tattoos, and he let them on Spotify exactly 28 hours (the number you can see on his fingers, which is also the date well known of his commitment with Harry in 2013 (the 28th of September) when they were so young... Sorry for my mistakes, but English is not my native language.
