another thing about michael's vocals, is that previously he would sing in a more pop punk style, mainly bc he was heavily influenced by pop punk bands. for example, in their song the girl who cried wolf, he sings the last like minute and a half repeating "is anyone there at all" and it gives me chills every time bc you really feeeeel it and he sounds great but it is definitely pop punk influenced bc it has more grit and emotion. in this song, he definitely is singing with a more "pop" style and he sounds great and it suits him so well! his vocal evolution has been so amazing to watch.

Another thing about this is that the pop punk style we all associate with him gives certain allowances for technical difficulties. His tone has always been spectacular but truth be told the pop punk style values inflection and emotion more than other things so his overall vocal control left something to be desired, I’m a huge fan of Michaels voice I thinks so beautiful in just a really pure way but it would kill me to see how many wrote him off as a bad singer simply cause of his breath/vocal control and in this song and even 2011 you can hear the effort he has put into working on those issues

@@samanthanicole282k I absolutely agree! his pop punk vocal style is not super clean and technical. doesn't mean it wasn't good, it was just a tad messier and with more vocal distortion, and his voice was almost deeper back then but that's what pop punk singing is. i've also always loved mike's voice thats why for me, hearing him in 2011 and complete mess i was even more impressed because you can tell how much he is working on it and improving it and it's interesting to hear that switch in vocal style after recognizing his voice as something different for so long.

@@julieclare37 truth be told I think that’s why he always gravitated to that style (despite obvious love for that genre) because confidence can have so much to do with those existing control issues and this was the guy who used to turn away from the screen when he sang in their old KZbin videos…and if you think about all that it’s a sign of his intelligence and him knowing his voice and it’s limitations really well, he picked a style he would’ve liked to sing in the first place, it highlighted his warm tone, and it was style that stood out in a positive manner even as the band evolved past that particular sound…

Ashton did get a nice adlib in the last portion of the song! So they all did get some vocals. This track is so relaxing to me, I always get chills. Can’t wait for the album!! They just performed this on the late late show if you wanted to check it out. :)

In an interview I remember them saying that the “you make me complete”/“you make me a complete mess” is in reference to how when you’re with a person they complete you but without them you’re a mess, etc. Also if you want more Michael vocals you should react to “2011”!

Ashton does sing at the end, you don't see him but you can hear him, I don't read complete mess as a bad thing, I put the emphasis on "You make me complete" meaning they are at their best when the four of them are together, and are able to be a complete mess, maybe the helicopter at the end is putting the spotlight on all four of them.

Michael changed his singing style and I'm so proud of him. His voice is so unique, I really hope he gets so sing more on the new album because he didn't have a single line on CALM. The most you go back into 5SOS discography, the most Michael has singing parts. I love Calum's voice so much. Hearing his voice evolution in the 10 year anniversary show left me speechless.

Fun fact: Luke used to wear a t-shirt with you complete me ss written on it. :) And Michael did many solo in the first 2 albums, more pop punk style and it fit perfectly with the grit and emotion in his voice. He has a unique tone. They all complete each other so well. Thanks for the reaction, I was waiting for the last 7 days! ;)

"I learned my lesson when I felt you slip away" I get that as, you know when you are having a bad mental health day, week or month, I personally isolate myself from people, and idk i kinda understand that as maybe one of them distance a little and the rest of the band is telling you make me complete, like im here for you, we are a complete mess together (and complete mess doesnt need to be in a bad way) I dont know if i make sense, im just bad with words

I feel like maybe the song is about them as a band. You know the music industry is strange and they’ve talked before about being tired and not being able to catch a break hence the lyric “You make me a complete mess”. But also them being together in the band completes them, they are like brothers (You make me complete / i ask no questions as your colours take their hold, as my darkness turns to gold inside). Also maybe there was a time that they thought they would break as a band (Call it a lesson when i feel you slide away/ Hang on to moments like they’ll never drift away, cause you’ll never get to say goodbye/ I learned my lesson when i felt you slip away). I’m probably wrong but idk that’s just my thought. Great reaction👍😊

I just love that they dedicated the song and music video to each other. They said it's supposed to represent the bands past, present and future, their up and downs and friendship to each other. Also when each of them adlp "you make me complete" in the end seems to me like they are solidifying the relationship they have with each other. As someone who as been a fan since 2014, wordscannot describe how happy and proud I am of this guys. Also the live performance of this at the late late show as well as both of the interviews (especially the backstage one) are fire

I loved this music video & the song. I was so IMPATIENT when when I was waiting for this MV to come out. My fav part of this whole thing was the Cashton part. Just the way Cal & Ash are towards each other is beautiful to me. They just kill it everytime.

about Michaels voice, I think he always had the most uniek voice sound but he often did the higher harmonies and small parts in songs. I definitely think he has improved but as you'll probably notice soon to in there older songs he sings a lot more and you can already hear his amazing voice :). and last thing about his voice is that is singing style doesn't always fit 5sos's style for a whole song you know so he often sings parts like the bridge, but yea I saw someone else say it to but there earlier stuff is very different so yea :) I love this!! and I can't wait for the Zach zang interviews, they're so good :)

Lu also said that this is album us 💯 them because they wrote it with just the 4 of them. They haven’t done that so it’s a big beautiful connected moment for them. You can just tell that they’re truly brothers for life & nothing can change that because of things of like this.

I watch other reaction videos for music production details, but always come to yours for lyrical analysis and what the song meaning is. When we listen to songs I think our default is to think everything is about a romantic relationship, but I think you're spot on with this one. I think it's about the relationship of the band itself. In the video it looks to me like the running in place signifies feeling held back. It looks like one is tackling the other and one is being dragged by the foot, then later they help each other up. So, maybe about the ups and downs of being in a long-term relationship with your bandmates? The play on words being that they make each other complete, but at the same time can make each other a complete mess. Maybe the desert is about isolation, like they feel cut off from the world (written during pandemic?), but in that space they still have each other. Maybe the mirror thing has something to do with reflection, like taking an honest look at yourself. Not sure what that is at the end, if it's a helicopter or an alien ship. Either way it's about escaping that isolation. Just my take, but it will be interesting to hear if they ever tell what it means. Love the chord progression and tension of the tempo changes in this.

I kinda lost respect for them because I never saw the tattoo on one of them from the tattoo roulette. Harry did it on camera and you could see the delicate part of skin (we all have; H told them to use that cause it’s less nervated so the pain isn’t that bad) starting to get red and swollen, like recent tattoos do. Before that, 5SOS was 👌🏻 ok. I think they’re also proof that if those incredible silly 1D dudes want to come back, they can. They might not play instruments (except Niall and maybe Harry and Louis) but in their cases the instruments are their voices. Yay 5SOS…..!
