“everything is grey, his hair, his smoke, his dreams” she hinted that it was an older man with grey hair. when you’re young things are very black and white but he has experience so things are grey for him. masterpieces are torn or frayed at the edges because they’re old and have traveled a lot. the more things you go through the more damage you take over time, but no matter how old you get, a masterpiece is still a masterpiece. i thinks the blue comes more from her perception of him and their relationship on a whole. she sees him as very cool toned, calm and mature vs her red passionate youth. when you mix blue and red you get purple and he decided he didn’t want all that trouble so she was left sad and blue and he was left devoid of all the colors she brought into his life.

Okay so the music video doesn't have much to do with the actual song. Colors is about Matty Healy, the singer from the 1975. Matty's mom was on a TV show and she struggles with depression. Matty and Halsey dated in like 2013-2014 ish. The song is about drug addiction. Matty was addicted to drugs (i think mainly heroin). When she says she "hopes he makes it to the day he's 28 years old" is that she hopes he doesn't join the 27 club (the age lots of celebrities die). He's "spilling like an overflowing sink" like he is going further into his addiction and his words are spilling and messy and can't control them. "dripping like a saturated sunrise" "ripped at every edge"; he's coming undone. He's devoid of color as the drug addiction is ruining him and his dreams. Don't pay too much attention to how the colors switch between people a lot. But basically "decided purple just wasn't for you" shows that when you're in a relationship, you rub off on each other and change. He changed her and he didn't like the person he created. It's also interesting bc he's red which symbolizes passion, lust, anger, intensity, etc and it slowly leaches from him. He gets covered in blue (her) as he slowly lets his addiction take him. So he's really grey with spots of blue on him bc of her. Bc she'es trying to be there for him. Idk if any of this made sense. I def left a lot out and i typed really fast lol.

Halsey and the mom both like the same guy (the dad), and the younger guy likes Halsey even though she likes his dad 😂 (I think I said that right). Blue is ethereal and color of the sky and ocean, which is “unexplored” and mysterious in a way, but calming at the same time. Unattainable in a sense because everyone likes someone they don’t/can’t have. She’s watching the color fade to gray eventually, as the excitement and vibrancy of the relationship and connection fade away.

This song is about Matty Healy (the lead singer of the band The 1975) who Halsey was briefly with in like early 2010s. Matty struggled with addiction to heroine and cocaine for a long time which obviously caused Halsey a lot of distress. Matty is also an avid atheist and nihilist which explains Halsey’s lyrics alluding to spirituality and death. Side note: Please please please consider checking out The 1975. They are my favorite band. Their sound can be a bit avant- guard at times but their lyrics are NEXT LEVEL.

I always thought it was both of them. The son is blue, his hands his eyes his jeans and the dad is grey, his hair, his smoke his dreams. The son is filled with drugs and she hopes he’ll make it to 28 years old. And the dad was red and liked her cause she was blue but decided purple wasn’t for him. In the video you get the idea the dad rejected her for his wife so she clung to the son who then found out about his dad and she lost them both. Now: as far as why it’s relatable. If you don’t see the video you can make the leap that everything was blue with him because he wasn’t happy hence the drug abuse etc. Then he began to “lose his color” when she looked at him everything becoming gray, his hair, his smoke his dreams. She says “ now your so devoid of color you don’t know what it means” so lyrically it could be one man and people can relate to that man that drifts further away from you and loses that brightness you originally loved about him.
