The steel superstructure of the new transport bridge at Boston Medical Center (BMC) was recently lifted across Albany Street. A 600-ton crane picked up the bridge frame and placed it on top of two elevator towers on the north and south sides of Albany Street. Erecting the new transport bridge is an important milestone in BMC’s history and its clinical campus redesign. Most importantly it is an essential step towards improving patient care and clinical outcomes for the most urgent cases arriving at BMC. Once completed, the bridge will be used to transport patients directly from the hospital’s existing helipad to the redesigned Emergency Department. Currently patients arriving at BMC via medical airlift require the use of an ambulance to bring them across Albany Street to the emergency room. Once the new bridge is completed and operational, Suffolk Construction will dismantle the landmark “Yellow Tube”, which has hung over Albany Street for over 30 years and is used to supply steam and electric utilities to BMC’s Menino campus.
Utilizing the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) method, the Menino Addition and Renovations project is being led by a four-party project management team consisting of owner Boston Medical Center, program manager Tocci Building Companies, architect and engineer TROJB, and construction manager Suffolk Construction.
