I’m obsessed with this man. He’s as close to perfect as I’ve ever seen.

I am a fan of Sufjan however it was always this song that did it for me. Hearing it performed solo and intimately just killed rock and roll for me :(

The way the story behind the lyrics is so terrible but his voice sounds so calm is kind of haunting. I love it. :D

Love this song. Even though it depicts such a traumatic experience, he sings it in such a haunting and beautiful way. And I love the description of the vid. It gives great insight to Sufjan's character.

I remember this is the first Sufjan's song I learnt to play with banjo by watching the Blogotheque 15 years ago! Geez time flies...

my favourite thing to do whenever I felt overwhelmed with life when I was going through hard times was to lay in the dark and close my eyes and let the beauty and grand-ness of this piece wash over me. It always felt like being carried in a Sunbeam up to heaven. So beautiful. I wish he would record this, but I feel some of the magic of the acoustics at this venue and the feeling of the applause add so much to it that it wouldn't be the same

yeah, the mistress witch is by far his best creation. it always sends shudders down my spine. (although, personally, "the predatory wasp of the palisades..." is coming close to second). Do you know where I can go to find out the true implications of this song's lyrics??

And the winter moves about Illinois When my sister picks a fight With the Alexander boy And my father locks the car By the store Still we figure out the keys And follow him once more Sufjan & Rosie: Oh my God We see it on the floor The woman on the bed The ankle brace she wore Stones and sled It could have been some other The mind that knows itself Has a mind to serve the other But we run back Scratching at the door Scratching at the door If I'm hiding in the sleeves Of my coat When my father runs undressed He's pointing at my throat And my brother has a fit In the snow And the traffic stops for miles We take him by the elbow Oh my God (oh my God) The shuffling at the floor (no one came) A mind that knows itself (to our side) Is a mind that knows much more (to carry us away from danger) So we run back (oh my God) Scrambling for cover (no one came) A mind that knows itself (to our side) Has a mind to kill the other (to carry us away from danger) Oh my God (oh my God) He left us now for dead He left us now for dead
