I think they just used two pipe cleaners, one red and one white twisting them and bending to form the candy cane shape. Then dunking it into the solution but with no food colouring whatsoever

Linda Qiu I think you're right -- it looks like that's what they did. I was going on the whole idea of colored crystals (like in the experiment) instead of clear on a twist. It looks pretty awesome!

You can do this with Borax too. You just mix boiling water and Borax in a jar (3 TBS Borax for every 1 cup of water), add the pipe cleaner shape, and 24-48 hours later you have a similar result (with smaller crystals). Also, using colored pipe cleaners instead of food coloring seems to turn out nicer.

The pipe cleaner has a very large surface area. By soaking it first in the solution and letting dry some crystals nucleate and form on that large surface area. When the form is placed back in the solution those crystals then act as seed crystals allowing the sugar to dissipate from the solution and recrystallize on on those seeds.

I thin the crystals formed because the pipe cleaner served as crystallization nuclei (something that causes a supersaturated solution of sugar to crystallize

+Jon Lambert They probably didn't add food coloring to the mixture and just used red and white pipe cleaners, so the color of the pipe cleaners showed through the clear crystals
