Thank you for taking this seriously and addressing all of this, I’ve always felt that taking care of exotic animals is not always hugs and smiles, it takes a lot of work and research beforehand and you have to take it seriously since these animals are in your hands. But with the true right care and prior knowledge not only are you going to have a “cool” pet but a best friend (friends plural for sugar gliders)

i got my sugar glider when i was 8, i don’t regret getting him because now he brings so much joy to me however, me nor my family did much research at all, we just thought they needed to bond with a human and not another sugar glider, we had him for 5 years and then eventually i made the call to get another one year old boy who also was alone and needed a better home then the one he was in, so we took him in. i feel so bad that i didn’t know there needed to be two😕. but i’m glad to say they are best friends and i have two happy sugar baby’s

Here in Bangkok the average life of Sugar Gliders is around 4-6 years. I was given a glider about nine months old because the person didn't want to care for it any longer. I raised it alone without other gliders. I spent around 14 hours a day with this animal. My glider "Queen Snook" had no cage she lived in my room. I'm nocturnal as well, I sleep all day. She died at age nine which in this part of the world is considered old. She ate wax worms, crickets, gecko's, moths, watermelon, corn, apple. The amount of time and effort was massive. She would try and kill other gliders its why I never got another one for her. She bonded to me very strongly. She slowly became old and died in her sleep. I would never recommend a sugar to anyone as a pet unless you're prepared to look after it probably. Here in Thailand many gliders are not cared for correctly its very sad.

I’m not that knowledgeable about sugar gliders, but in short they get extremely depressed when they’re alone. Because of this, the sugar glider won’t eat much and it’s possible it could die, but I’m not sure if I’m correct about this. I just know that they need to come in pairs so they can keep each other company.

What should you do if you only have 2 sugar gliders but one of them dies? Should you try to rehome them with a friend that has sugar gliders until you can get another one, or should you just keep them solitary until you get another. Would there be issues rehoming them temporarily with another colony?
@zaggo3425
@zaggo3425 2 жыл бұрын
if you can afford and want to get another, do it. Your fur baby will thank you. If you don't plan on keeping purchasing gliders, the best thing to do is to rehome them with someone who has one or more gliders, as they will fit right in since they are social animals. You should NEVER keep them solitary. Ever. They are very social animals and leaving them alone will lead to depression, anxiety, boredom, self-multilation, and ultimately suicide. You have to keep in mind their natural habitat is not a home, so to make them comfortable they need a friend and lots of things to do to keep them enriched.

Hey, i feel like someone should mention how sometimes, a SPECIFIC pet that is a social/colony animal can't live in groups. Sometimes because of trama, abuse, or just regular personality, some pets need to ne alone. Ive had agressive colony animals before who hated being with their own kind, but did fine on there own. Now i agree with always keeping colony animals together, but circumstances arent always the same.

There is an exception to the one glider rule: a glider who is incompatible with other gliders. This is usually a glider who has been injured in a way that will not fully heal (such as losing an eye), and pushed out of the colony. The colony no longer accepts this glider and will attack. This glider will become an only glider and will need lots of extra attention and companionship from their owner. Out of a massive population, there are a few antisocial gliders who simply don't seem to get along with any potential cagemates. These are very rare and often the result of their bonded companion dying; they will not accept new companions. Fortunately, this almost never happens, but compatibility issues do occur. No matter how well you do the introduction, once a colony has more than two members, they can afford to reject another glider they think will disrupt their hierarchy. While males are reputed as aggressive, don't think that females are not. Female sugar gliders don't usually live as happy equals under a shared male, one of them must be Queen. Usually the best chance for them to get along and accept the hierarchy is introduction at early age or being related and together from the start.

Yes, you can get one, depending on the needs of the sugar glider. I only had one and he lived longer than they usually live. He could not be held with others. People were mean to me because I only got one. People were trying to prove a point where I tried to make life as good as possible, listening in to my sugar glider as well as talking to skilled vets. More and more research has come out that sugar gliders are not the same. Esp male sugar gliders are more asocial than females and some of them prefer to be alone.

I love this video, very informative and I wish I had done more extensive research before getting sugar gliders, as my 14 year old self didn’t know what I was thinking. But now 3 years later and all 5 of them are the what makes my world go round! ❤️ But as to your comments on the ‘two or none’, this is usually and normally what goes. But there have been few cases reported in the sugar glider community, where a glider simply doesn’t get along with the sugar gliders they’ve been introduced to and have gone through months of trying to bond them. Nevertheless had lived a happy and healthy life in solitude. I’m nowhere near being an expert,- I’ve only heard of a handful of these stories, and still are wary of them, but it is something to take note on as knowledge of suggies expand! ❤️

To me sugar gliders smell like Heaven! 😍 To avoid them overmarking their territory make sure that you never clean the cage 100% - the cleaner the cage is the worse the smell will be the next day. I always leave a couple smelly items inside their cage after cleaning and that helps a lot.

Thank you for providing this information. Ive kept Sugar Gliders 20 years and everything you said is spot on. One circumstance that I feel should be discussed is owning a pair that for whatever reason lose a cage mate. Obviously getting another to replace it is what needs to be done, can you advise how to pick one or a pair for prospective adoptees then how to inteoduce them. The Gliders I started with as well as the few I have gotten over time were bought at a pet store where you request the number and sex and you are given a bonding pouch with your request. Since keeping them and breeding some Ive noticed some Glider parents produce much easier to handle Joeys than others. If possible finding a breeder that allows buyers to interact with the Joeys as well as parents of them. That said I believe all Gliders can be bonded with. Bless those willing to adopt adult and older Sugar Gliders. Time , patience and a dont give up attitude will get you and Glider bonded. Allowing them to live their lives totally in a cage with no interaction isnt fair to them.or you. Never lose temper or mistreat any Glider. They are wild captive bred animals and will always retain instinctive traits or habits. They can and do have a painful bite. Suger Gliders bite primarily for two reasons. Fear and selfdefense then if you have more than one cage with mates or families in each they are territorial. If you handle any from one cage do not open or attempt to handle those in a different cage without washing hands and arms well. Mistakenly placing a Glider in wrong cage can result in a violent conferentation and should be avoided. Gliders are , I agree very good pets for the right people. I feel like you have a lot of valuable and vital information; obviously, you have tons of experience and the knowledge to discern between facts and misinformation. *However* , you present this wealth of knowledge and care in a passively judgmental way. Under your facts and smile, half of your content in this video is just criticizing others. You also seem to respond to all the negative comments with negativity; either don't engage with uninformed commenters, or do so in a non-argumentative, patient, and kind manner. This might not be fair, but it is the only way you will successfully inform and engage your audience. I get it - mistreatment bothers you and it *should* bother you. But, if you really want to reach those seeking to learn, you will push them away from good information with your combative nature. I feel like you are lecturing and chastising your audience instead of presenting your knowledge in an unbiased and informative way. Fair or not, try to keep your frustrations out of your informational videos. If you want to rant, make a rant video and advertise it as such. Otherwise, you come across as overly emotional and consequentially untrustworthy. tl;dr - I think you're awesome, but please stick to the facts and address misinformation in an unbiased and patient way. Stay out of the comments if you're just going to fight with or criticize your audience.

YES THANK YOU!! Finally someone being completely real about what it is like to have sugar gliders. I got mine 2 years ago from an abusive home and I'm still working on their health. Calcium deficiency and bad diet right from when they were born has actually stunted their growth and when I got them, they weighed only 40 grams each. I see facebook adds pretty much every day of people seeking sugar gliders without knowing how to care for them properly and people selling their sugar gliders they have had for a few weeks to a year because they didn't realize the amount of time they need. It must be really sad lives the poor animals have being moved from one neglectful home to another.

I’ve had sugar gliders for years and recently I bought 2 from separate breeders and one of the males did not like the other one. It would scratch and bite the other and I had to return the other one, which was really weird. 1 year later I still have him and he seems perfectly fine no signs of stress or depression.

I tried telling this to people who saw rats I had years ago and wanted one, I tells them "ya need two at least". If someone wants one pet then get a snake, most of them are solitary animals and it's recommended they be housed individually. Of coarse do your research either way. Worst thing one can do with any pet is impulse buy. Great video. Gliders are cute but I don't think they're the pet for me.

Thank you for providing the best information and not sugar coating it. Especially when it comes to pets that MUST have a companion. People give so many excuses and that's just it. It's about the pet not the owner. Animals that live in groups MUST be in groups. There is no excuse, your pet is not special and needs to be alone, you need to change the environment or figure out what you are doing wrong. If you can't afford to properly and fully set up an animal then it's not the time for you to own that animal. No excuses. And there are so many animals that belong with a same species companion. It's sad to see it when they are alone because it is animal abuse and it is selfish. Haters going to hate. You're wonderful and real about the quality of life with your pets!

I'm not understanding why everyone's talking about it being abusive to just have one glider and if that's the case then it shouldn't be legal to sell only one to a customer, yet they do it everyday. Mine was a gift and is now 4 years old and with me everyday. Couldn't be happier or healthier. I'm an animal lover to the core with 5 different animals and a pond of koi fish and all of my animals are loved, taken care of, healthy and most of all, HAPPY. My gliders never been sick , never depressed, very active at night running around me. So calling that abuse is just that, your calling it abuse but if it was abuse the breeders and merchants wouldn't be legally allowed to sell just one, here in the USA. And anyone thats known me or comes into my home and sees my animals will know right away without thinking twice about the fact that these animals are very much loved and they're all in tip top shape and healthy. Including my 14 baby koi in a pond in my backyard. So I'm not understanding what your saying about haters or hating, whatever it is that your saying. Dogs have always been known to be or brought up in packs but yet you can have one. If you raise an animal that's only known you well that's all they'll know, they're not gonna be looking for the rest of the pack. They look for you. Fortunately for me, I get to be with my animals 24/7 because I'm retired so they all get my love and attention and they're all thriving STILL, Especialky my sugar glider.

Laurie Nelson you’re wrong when you say if it was abusive then it would be illegal to buy just a single animal. Do you think it’s abusive to remove a cats claws? I do, and it’s not illegal. Do you think it’s abusive to dock a dogs ears or tail? I certainly do, but it’s not at all illegal. Do you think it’s abusive to inbreed an animal to the point where it can’t breathe properly and has health problems its entire life (like pugs)? Breeders obviously don’t have a problem with it because it makes them money. Please use your head, morality and legality are NOT the same thing.

Laurie Nelson the need to colonize and gather in groups is in the sugar gliders dna, it has nothing to do with the way they’re raised, they’re not human babies. Their deep and unchangeable instincts tell them to find others of their kind.

@@stixandcritters4640 yes, I forgot them. In Germany it's recommended to keep 4 or more mice or rats, so that they would be a group, not only a pair. Most mice kept alone are males. I kept mice until 2016, because my boyfriend is alergic to them and I always kept neutered males together. My biggest neutered group was 18. Never had a problem and never had a mouse, that died because of the operation. But, according to different FB-groups, the prices to neuter a mouse in some countries are crazy. My vet took 35 euros, a little less per mouse if it were more mice on the same day. But some people in the US have to pay more for one mice, than I had to pay for my cat. 🙈

@@ellierox3744 amazing! Yes I also think it's better for these species to be kept in more than 3 (I have 3 mice cuz one of them died, and 5 rats, my rats are going very well together, way better than when I had 2) Also yes some spaying / neutering prices are crazy!!! dude I'm in France and if I just want my vet to CHECK the health of one of my rodents, I'll have to pay 38 or 41 (one of the vets even said I should pay 82 for two mice checkups...) so yeah its expensive. I plan on breeding some mice next year, but I'm afraid that neutering the males will be too expensive, I don't wanna pay 500€ to neuter 5 males... also for my cats, we had to pay 70-80€ to get the males neutered, and 120-140€ for the females....... which is expensive and it sucks, because it prevents some people from spaying their cats, which leads to so many unwanted litters and street cats :( (sorry for talking so much but I'm so happy that some vets will only make you pay 35 for neutering one male mouse!! That's amazing, especially since I plan on moving to Germany xD)

@@stixandcritters4640 Vets in Germany have lists of prices and they can decide if they want that price, or more, but the highest they can be is 3 times of the normal price. When I came with 2 animals, they would let me pay only for one and for a normal check up was 9 €. 2 years ago another vet opened and sued all the others because they were to cheap. Thank you so much for all your information. I have done about 4 months of research and I work from home refurbishing things and then selling them, so I have gotten their cage ready to go, I did find a great breeder who is reputable and I have already purchased my babies just waiting now for them to be old enough to take home. The breeder did state it was always best to get 2 or more she did say one if you can invest all your time with them. But through my research it stated to at least get 2 which I did. They are both girls which I already found a vet for them and researched the food needed as well as what to place in their cage. Which I suffer from insomnia and up at night so I will plan to have them out with me as much as possible. I do have kids but they are older my daughter being 10 and my step son 16. But like your dad this is more for me then the kids which they will be apart of but for the most part the care will be on me. Anyone deciding to get these guys please do as much research as you can to make sure this is the pet that you want and that you can provide a good home for them. They are a lot of money for 2 I have spent 650 dollars on the girls, this is not including their cage which I saved a bit because I know how to build my own but even still that was about 350 bucks in making a proper cage for them with plenty of room and things to climb. So if you plan this just know it will be a thousand bucks to start. To purchase the animals plus get their cage. But just like other animals they will need to go to the vet for check ups and tests so that will also cost money. So please these are wonderful animals and I have been wanting a pair for quite some time but had to wait till my finances where right.

Heyyyyy....love the pink hair btw!! OK so, this is NOT one of those 'what if's' questions you were talking about regarding getting 0 or 2 gliders....BUT...Wait please keep reading, I need advice! My father just recently passed away and I am his only daughter trying to keep up with his house and everything he has left behind but most importantly I have adopted his sugar glider Tigger! Now I love Tigger and have been researching and watching videos and trying to gain every knowledgeable piece of info about them since I only knew the basics. With that being said, I would like very much to keep him but I want him to be happy as he already is struggling as to why my father has up and left him! Tigger and we have came along way already in our personal bonding and I was happy to see that I'm pretty much on target with the care and diet etc as I watched your video, except for one thing...I only have Tigger!!! So should I begin looking for a friend for him immediately?! Here is some background info on Tigger to better advise me hopefully. He is an adult male (around 4-5 years old), I am 99% sure he is not neutered. My Father had two sugar gliders to begin with I remember, but shortly after he noticed they had a baby (Tigger), then decided to sell the parents and keep the baby...so Tigger has really been by himself this whole time :(. I am willing to get another one or whatever it takes I just do not want to make a rushed or wrong decision. Do you have any advice on what route I should go? Do I get female as a companion, right cuz males will fight?! Do I keep them apart but next to each other in separate cages at first? Do I possibly not get another one since it's been too long? I'm still educating myself but your video stood out to me esp since this was the only thing/requirement that I hadn't met yet and your seriousness has me rushing for answers! Thanks so much! Love, Tigger's adoptive Mom or Sister or...shit maybe I shouldn't title myself, that's kinda confusing lol! Oh and thanks for such the educational video, helps tremendously!

Happy Tails...obviously you did NOT read ANYTHING that I wrote!!! Or you would see that your response made absolutely NO sense at all! The reason I have the single sugar glider that I have now is because MY DAD DIED!!!!! I could have kept the glider like I did, trying to take care of it to the best of my ability when I did not want nor desire to have one as a pet in the first place!! Or I could have just let it die...I guess, who knows?! Its not like the local pet store sells them or would have taken it if I brought it there! Anyways, so yeah...before just replying with some BULLSHIT senseless response that makes absolutely no sense in regards to what someone writes or asks you, maybe take a second to read it first! I know I wrote a lot but that was because I was and still am legitimately concerned as to how I can give this little animal the life it deserves! Given the fact that I'm sure its already sad and confused as to where my dad is and was forced to get used to me now, I'm trying to help this poor animal the best I can! How my father was raising the glider before he died is close to irrelevant now and I shouldn't be held responsible for him raising it alone without a companion. So all I was asking was, is it too late to get him a companion and if not, then some advice on going about getting anotherone would have been helpful and appreciated! When I watched your video I thought you might have been knowledgeable and helpful because, well...why make an informative video then, right? But I think I'm wrong...You obviously aren't here to help anyone...That is very clear on your ignorant response to my comment!!!!!!! Then after I read your comment, I then watched a few more videos of yours and honestly it seems to me that you just like seeing the negative things people comment about on your videos. It seems to entertain you to then go and respond to them in a very rude and condescending way! Sorry you thought I was saying something I was not! And, well...thanks for nothing. Can you feed them everything you said and skip the insects? I love the way they look but I can't deal with live insects. Why do they need the insects? If is because of protein can I substitute a good protein mix instead of insects??

Their happiness is important especially since they Are held captive and purchased by humans we are the sole person for their survival. Please treat animals with car ( the right care) and love . 3:53 in some instances sugar gliders CAN in fact be bought alone, but that depends on their personality, how much time you spend with them, and the situation.. however it’s recommended to have two. I had two sugar gliders, one passed away, and I was going to get another, but the one still alive was doing very well being alone since I was giving him so much time and attention. I made sure to do tons and tons of research, ask multiple professionals and Vets, and having had plenty of experience owning them, I found that my glider was perfectly okay without having another one in the cage with him. But I would do tons of research and have experience with them, before just only getting one to start out with.

My boyfriends family adopted a solo sugar glider blindly and it was the best mistake when my bf and I decided to take care of him fully. We took him in and realized he was really deprived of a cage mate. He was lethargic and depressed. We got a friend for him and he’s so much happier. This sugar glider was alone for ten years and I don’t think he became a sugar glider until we got him his cage mate. The only thing is he is super protective over his food and doesn’t like to share. But he sleeps and cuddles with the other boy. It’s cute when they rub up on each other. Considering he’s going to be 11 soon, he’s the healthiest he’s ever been. He’s loves us and waits at the door of the cage to come jump around on us. They need cagemates!

With having 4 of them (2 gals and 2 guys) due to my friend didn’t do his homework and thought of letting them ‘alive’ in the wilderness, I’m TOTALLY agreed with everything you said! For those who wanted to take them as a pet, PLEASE do your research properly! I’m a truly lucky guy, as they were being fruitful and the highest number I had was 13 of them! Though some had unfortunately passed away, I’m still having 9 of them and I’m just felt happy & thankful I made the decision to upkeep them, about 7 years ago! And it seems like besides I’m the owner, other people will definitely do not have such passion and patience to really deal with them!

You're getting a lot of hate comments, but I have to say that I appreciate this video. I've always been interested in them as they're so cute, but it's important for people to make a responsible decision about animals they take in. Many people see them as toys and don't take looking after them seriously. You made many good points and I'm sure you saved people who were thoughtful enough to research them the trouble of not taking good care of a pet and the difficulties of a task they don't have the ability to take on.
@kammywong2429

Please please please do your research before having them. They're a long term commitment because they can live 10 to 15 years. Their needs, care and especially their diet can be very complicated. They are also prone to some health issues, make sure you have a vet who has experience with sugar gliders. You need at least a pair because they are social animals. Yes, you can give them your time and attention but nothing beats the communication and companionship of your own kind. If you're a new sugar glider owner, you can have one first to bond and to learn more on how to take care of them and maybe get the second later. Having two at the same time could be difficult to some new owner.
