Based on the 1980 Chevy Citation “X-Body” platform, the front wheel drive 1982-‘90 Chevy Celebrity stole the “A-Body” nameplate away from the mid-size rear wheel drive Malibu / Monte Carlo, which were re-named the “G-Body” as a result. You didn’t know that? You’ll learn lots more in this fun video about the Slow-Lebrity.

When we had our first child in 1994, my wife quickly got tired of stuffing the car seat in the back of her 1991 RS Camaro. So we sold the car, put some of the money towards our first home purchase, and used the rest to purchase a 1987 Celebrity Eurosport. I have to say the car was good-looking in its day, and is becoming nostalgic these days. The car was always a pleasure to drive, and I always loved the low back bench seat, which gave the interior an open feeling. It's a car I remember fondly.

My wife and I used to deliver newspapers back in the early 90's. I'd pick up cars on their way to the boneyard to use on the route, squeezing the last life from them. One car was an '83 Celebrity with a 2.8 carbureted V6. That car took some serious abuse and I literally drove it until the wheels fell off ( passenger front hub broke off and I passed my wheel and hub as i drove into the ditch). It was a descent car to drive and it delivered papers in the blizzard of '93 and the flooding and freeze that followed.

Wow, bad memories on this. We had an 86' we bought used in early 90's with low miles. Same color but 4 cylinder. The electrical problems were so bad we had to sell it. My dad had a celebrity wagon with a manual trans when I was a kid. I somehow managed to break something in the linkage while messing with the shifter while it was sitting (not running) in the garage. It rolled backward into the door and I was terrified. I tried pushing it back, but my kindergarten-sized carcass couldn't budge it. I still don't know what actually broke . . . I had 2 more shifter incidents with the family cars as a kid and maybe its poetic that I have spent the last 20 years developing shifters at an oem supplier.

I've never owned a Celebrity but, I did buy a mid 80s Cavalier off the back row of a used car lot back in the mid 90s. I only paid about $500 for it and used it as a winter "beater with a heater" just to get through. If I recall, it had the 2.2L engine and 3 speed automatic. It served its purpose well and I sent it to the junkyard when the timing belt broke in the spring. I definitely got my money's worth out of that little car because I was driving it about 50 miles round trip to work and back, mostly on county roads that were only plowed during daylight hours. Since I worked midnight shift at the time, that little guy went through snow drifts up to the hood on the way home more than once. There were some that took a few tries to get through but, we made it home every time!

I was surrounded by that platform throughout my childhood. We had a 85 Celebrity with the 2.8 that we drove across country for 4 days when dad retired from the Navy. I later learned to drive in it. After an accident it was replaced with a 86 Buick Century. Dad also had a 82 Celebrity as a work car at that time and a uncle had a Pontiac 6000 that had some sort of appearance package similar to the Eurosport. Our high school had a 6000 wagon for the bus drivers and it was used as a substitute for our drivers ed car once when it was in the shop. It was kinda old at that point and several kids thought the early-mid 80s design was strange but to me it felt like home lol.

Hello Tim Elliott, Thanks for watching and writing. You can see my "Cancelled? Wadddaymean we're cancelled?" show on the Motor Trend channel (if you still have cable TV). Though we did 31 episodes over three years, the last new episode was done before Covid. What MT is showing now is re-runs. That's cool, but there will be NO MORE new episodes. I was under the impression the show was popular and was told "be ready for season 4" but it never happened. I waited NINE MONTHS for "the call" that never came. Eventually I called the Second Banana at MT who said: "nobody called you? The show has been cancelled". A lousy way to end a good show. But hey, it gave MT room for excellent shows like Motor Myth Busters and Muscle Car Crew which consistently get 1-out-of-5 -star viewer comments!!! Thanks for watching KZbin! -Steve Magnante

It was 300 bucks, and the local boneyard dropped it off at my house. I was only 16 back in '99, and it was my first motor job. Hence why it took all winter long to get it done. Got the timing and firing order set right, but had no power. My father and late godfather looked at it, and found that i crossed the fuel supply and return lines at the mechanical pump. Ran great afterwards. Eventually that car got parked and then later turned into a tin can.

Bought a 1985 Celebrity in 1992 for $3500 with only 50,000 miles on it. Drove it for 13 years with very few problems that I couldn't fix myself. While on vacation leaving the Badlands of SD we were moving at around 50 mph when my 3 year old son, in his car seat between my wife and I, woke up from a nap stretched his legs (he was a big boy) and kicked the shifter into reverse. We were on a dirt/gravel road, the front tires skidded for a few feet the engine stalled and all the dash lights were on or flashing with bells ringing. I remember looking in the rear view mirror expecting to see transmission fluid/parts all over the road. Came to a stop, restarted the engine, put it in drive and drove away. My wife and I looked at each other and thought holy crap what just happened. The thing was no worse for wear and we drove it for 10 more years with no trans problems. Our other two older kids slept through it all in the back seat.

The Cutlass Ciera and Buick Century were definitely steps up from the Celebrity and Pontiac 6000. Did a brief stint at a Hertz Rent-a-car, and the Cieras and Century's were always favored over the lowly Celebrity and 6000. And all of them were favored waaay over the "K" cars.

I remember these early to mid 80’s times and seeing the avenues just full of the gray, black and red trim cavalier, celebrity, monte carlo ss, and later- luminas! Goodwrench was alive and Earnhardt was about to be in the drivers seat for them.

My parents had 3 celebrity's when I was a kid, a teal 2.8 Euro sport that they got wrecked in when I was 1 year old, I still remember when I was 3 and they had it hauled off to the junk yard, my earliest childhood memory 😁. A grey 2.8 Euro sport that replaced it both of those were 1989's and a black one my dad flipped to my uncle, it was an 84 2.5 Euro sport 😁

I was 17 back in 85. Worked for Sheridan Chev/Olds Cadillac in Pickering Ontario in the parts department. In my spare time I would take sold cars for gas ups. Got in a orange Z24 hatch with a 2.8 and manual, revved it up and dropped clutch and experienced torque steer for the first time. Damn near took out a row of work vans. Lol

Friend's Ma had a 1990 wagon with the 3.1 multiport(one year only) I am not going to say it was fast. But it would leave a stop sign and go up to about 50mph in a hurry. All it took to roast them was turning the wheel about half a turn. That was a RARE thing in that era. The Buick and Olds version of this car was actually really nice, the early ones rode like a heavy car and had nice seats and leg/head room.

79 and 80 I remember mopar dealers had a TV and video tape player set-up in showrooms to knock the X bodies (and the problem remained in the A bodies ) for their brake systems being unstable in hard braking and panic stops . They pushed the F M and R bodies as being safer for towing stuff and if you really wanted front drive it was better to wait for the K cars . The GMs were later on the news for doing 180s during panic stops since they were to cheap to use a rear relief valve like VW/Audi and the Taurus twins .

@@googleusergp In 1987 my parents bought a 1984 Celebrity. It was owned by the bank that my dad worked at (it was part of a fleet of cars that were leased from Avis for managers and higher ups). The "nice" cars would be offered for sale to employees when the leases were up. It was a 4-door CL with a velour interior and the carbureted 2.8. Our first GM car and it's where I learned how nice GMs drove compared to the dump truck ride and handling of our Volare (the Coronet, though, actually rides very nice for being torsion bars and leaf springs). Issues with the Celebrity that cropped up over time were the clear coat peeling (dad had the hood, roof, and trunk repainted); the rack got morning sickness (replaced that); the TCC solenoid went bad after we figured out it wasn't the transmission like so many shops wanted to tell us. My genius idea was hooking up a kill switch inline with the brake pedal switch to disable the TCC. We went to a local Chevy dealership service department and showed them our diagnostic procedure (i.e. the switch) and they agreed to replace the solenoid for $186 plus tax. It was fine after that. The carburetor gave us trouble once and it frustrated dad because it wasn't a simple BBD like those on the Coronet and Volare. I remember being out in 10 degree weather with him in the driveway trying to service that thing. He was very mechanically inclined and so we eventually did whatever it was to get it going again (I still remember when he ordered the service manual from Helm). It was bigger than a phone book. If there was one thing I never liked, it was the brakes. I read later on that they were undersized for the vehicle. However, driven normally, it was a very nice sedan. We enjoyed it for many years. It was still around after my parents passed away and I donated it to Kars 4 Kids. It actually made me sad, because they truly enjoyed the comfort of that car.

So many fond memories. Our family had an 83 Aries wagon with the 2.2 and automatic. Keeping up with traffic merging especially when loaded was always pitiful and often a scary experience due to the lack of power. One day my teacher gave me a ride home in his new 85 celebrity with the 2.8 and I was shocked how quiet smooth and strong that popular 80s sedan was. My drivers ed teacher had a white with dark red plush velour seating 85 ciera sedan with the 2.5. Engine was gruff but fairly well muted ride was smooth felt yet not too mushy. Over the years I owned and sold many GM a body cars. The later 2.8 fuel injected ones proved extremely reliable. Example of GM success. The Buick century and cutlass ciera stayed in production thru 96 many years after celebrity and Pontiac 6000 were retired.

I've had a bunch of cars over the past 40 years. My favorites were a 1968 Hemi Charger, a '64 Dodge Max Wedge (a clone I assembled from real Stage III parts) and the three altered wheelbase Match Bash cars I built. These were the Wilshire Shaker '63 Nova, Rampage '63 Dodge Dart and Funny Fairmont '81 Fairmont. You can Google any one of these cars and probably see a story I wrote about them - with pictures.
