Sugar Ray is one of THE best. Tone, taste, feeling… both instrumental and vocal. 1980, I ran into Sugar at Mad Murphy’s in Hartford. It was the year of Urban Cowboy and I told him the only gig I could get was in a country band. His reply: “Don’t do it, man.” I’d like to be able to say he was right, but it was a year of gigging with hard bop pedal steel players Ray Gantek and Larry Cox who opened me up to developing a jazz harp style. Love everything about this cut… Alex’s chorus, Duke’s delicate fills and harmonic shapes, Alberto’s cute musings, perfect rhythm section. It doesn’t get any better. -Magic Dave
