When Hagler was ready to fight Ray retired. Then picked his time and cameback to challenge Hagler to what looked like a foot race with some random punches.

Correct on both counts. Ray retired in 1982 after setting up an event Hagler thought would be an announcement of their mega fight. Then after one fight in 1984, he re-retired. Leonard watched the Hagler-Mugabi fight in late 1986 and figured Hagler had slowed enough that he could beat him. Turned out, he was right.

The Hitman is probably my all time favorite fighter. His dimensions allowed him to use that style, not really a Philly Shield. He kept that left hand low to change the angle of his jab, differentiating the angle from that of his right hand, which was probably the most defeat sting weapon ever in that division. Leonard really slayed a dragon here.

One of the biggest misconceptions about his career is that he was dominated by Duran in the first fight. Not even close. If anything, he was the one coming on at the end and ran out of time. I think he figured why go that route if I dont have to and that's why he boxed in the rematch.

I always loved to watch Sugar Ray. He had almost perfect boxing. Speed, footwork, lighting fast combinations, great jab, good guard. He always looked good when he boxed. Slick, sharp, cool and good stance at the same time. High class.

THE HITMAN!!! Such a momentous matchup. Tommy’s record was unbelievable going into this fight. Around 30 stoppages only twice going the distance. Leonard knew he had his hands full! Maybe the greatest puncher in Welterweight history, and a brilliant outside boxer. I’d put this win as his greatest. Both guys in their primes, both would go on to have memorable wins and fights after this. An unrivaled display of prowess, tactical genius, determination, and God given talent.

Hagler... what a monster. Two handed power, could switch stances fluidly, counter, box on the outside with his formidable reach and footwork, and even outbrawled Hearns. Sucks that he lost by split decision in his last fight. Should have done a rematch.
