Would've been a great fight, but I have Ray winning that one.

If they fought head to head it would be a pretty unfair In Roy's favor. I know to some old timers that might seem like sacrilege but Roy's era of the 1990s was when fighters really started taking advantage of next day weigh-ins. A fighter like Oscar De La Hoya who was also of Roys era was far closer to Ray Robinson in size(and still probably slightly bigger) than Roy was. Roy Jones weighed like 180 lbs the day of the fight vs Bernard Hopkins in their first fight at middleweight while Ray would often come in at below the middleweight limit of 160 weighing in the mid 150s. This basically meant that weight classes from the 1990s onward were 15-20 lbs heavier than the listed weight. Every fighter did this in order to stay competitive and they have reined it in some now days with re-hydration clauses for some fights but it was the wildwest for it in the 1990s. If middleweight Roy Jones foght in Rays era he have easily been a light heavyweight and if Middeweight Ray fought in Roy's era he'd be a welterweight. In terms of overall p4p i consider Ray to be the best overall of all time. However, if people held his post prime losses against him the way they hold Roy's against him no one would considering Ray the best ever. Ray had a lot of post prime defeats to fighters he never would have lost to yet people never hold those against him(and rightfully so). Yet so many of those same people will say things like"had Roy retired after the first Tarver fight he might be the best ever" basically meaning they are holding his post prime losses against him. There was a top 50 p4p list ESN did in the early 2000s where they listed Marco Atonio Barerra and De LA Hoya a head of Jones. 2 fighters of Roy's era that were never truly rated higher than him p4p during Roy's prime regardless of how much the ring magazine tried to cheerlead for Oscar in the late 90s. This list was compiled by many of the same old timer types who claim losses shouldn't matter that much. yet there they were using his post prime losses as a reason to rank him lower than fighters who were never his equals during his prime. If you're talking about physical gifts like speed, power and reflexes then Roy has the advantage(I think Roy was the most physically gifted fighter ever) and Roy was also better defensively. In terms of toughness and overall skill it goes to Ray. Where Ray separates himself is competition and longevity.

Mike, the post weigh-in weight gain that you addressed is an obvious and serious problem in sports with weight divisions, in particular boxing. Good analysis of Robinson vs. Jones jr. ranking!

Roy jones in his prime was superhuman, it would’ve been a great fight but I’d pick jones to win on points or even late stoppage, let’s not forget jones went up to heavyweight and tagged Ruiz with a fantastic right hand which almost had him down,

Roy’s lack of a jab makes this a tough fight for him Ray Robinson times him and probably knocks him out

Sugar Ray Robinson had much more power in both hands & could take far more punching punishment then Roy Jones Jr. Even though Jones knockout percentage is higher, it proves that boxers in his era vastly had weaker chins then in Robinsons time . If points is scored based landing effective punches instead of dancing around the ring, then I think Robinson wins 8 out of 10 times.

Roy had a DEVASTATING left hook. Probably the best I have ever seen, and yes I've seen Frazier, Chavez, Olivares, Tyson...

@slender4 Frazier & Tysons knockout percentage is much higher than Roy Jones Jr ,& Tyson has 28 first round knockouts. Comparing heavyweight power to Roy Jones Jr. Is not a good comparison. Like I said in my first post....Modern day boxers can't take punches like Sugar Ray Robinsons era. Gene Fullner, Carmen Bassillo , Jake Lamatta. That's why Jones Jr left hook appears to be better than it actually is.
