Little known fact: k.d lang's version of this song was playing in Mr Layton's room on the morning of his passing. This is why they had Steven Page sing it at the funeral. Brings tears to my eyes every time.

I met Jack many times. He always treated me like a billion bucks. He made me feel like I could get off my reserve and make a better future for my community. He was right. He encouraged me to leave and go to school, I just graduated. he passed 3 months into my nursing program. When i graduate this NOV I'm going to pin a picture of him over my heart. If I never met him, and if he didnt go out of his way to keep contacting me to support me and my dreams i wouldn't be here as proud as I am today

"I did my best, though it wasn't much. I couldn't feel, so I learned to touch. I told the truth; I didn't come to fool you. And even though it all went wrong, I'll stand before the lord of song with nothing on my tongue but hallelujah". Jack was cut down far too soon.

Arguably my greatest vocal influence, in 22 years of singing as a concert vocalist Not only the best version of the song, but a perfect display of a unique, powerful vocalist All BNL controversy aside, Page is a great influence and hero to me - I hope he realizes the value, influence, and power he's always had to help others - with his voice. "Your music saved my life" -- Page, I was holding that sign in St. Louis 6 years ago -- you nodded to me, said thank you and handed me your guitar pick.

Thankyou so much Stephen Page for continuing your career after BNL. You were a shining star in that band and you've continued solo and helped them carry on without you. You're an inspiration to everyone. No hatred. All love. I wish the press could have seen the happiness you gave your fans before they decided they wanted to make a quick buck. Come back to the UK soon. Please.

I've said it before.... Every singer should learn from Steven Paige about to how to sing a song with emotion and FEEL. This song was great before Steven Paige was a star, and then he shows why he's a star. This video should be a seminar for singers. THIS is how you sing a song.

I remember the year Jack Layton died. I was sad, even if i didn't agree with all his views. He was the only politician who had earned my respect, and he died just three years before i could vote for him.... Three years before i could say i voted for a man i respected as a human being, politician or not. He was a good man, and i wish more people in his line of work were like him.... Jack Layton i will miss you. I hope one day that someone will fill your shoes, and bring back the best damn opposition Canada ever had! Until then, Goodnight Mr. Layton

@silvertamagachi7 жыл бұрын
Well, Karen, he's a very different vocalist than Freddy. Freddy is bombast and EPICNESS, while Steven is much more subdued and (IMO) has more pathos. Freddy's what you listen to when you want to be cheered up, because even his sad songs have a level of grandeur that makes you want to pump your fist more than cry. Steven's what you listen to when you want to feel . . . I don't even know, melancholy? Even his happiest songs have an undercurrent of depression that I think you can hear in his voice. They're both exceptionally talented, just at different things. (I realize I did to an extent conflate songwriting with singing, and that's my bad. It's just hard to describe the mood of a voice/song without getting into the writing.)

Having grown up in Toronto, I was fortunate enough to witness Jack's great work in city council. He stuck up for those without a voice in city hall. He brought this great work ethic to the House of Commons too. Jack never threw anyone overboard. I think it's appropriate that his funeral would include Steven Page. Page had a difficult time with a drug related incident several years before. Jack would never abandon a friend. I'm quite sure Steven's inculsion in this funeral was Jack's idea.

I had just a couple of brushes with Jack Layton, back when he was a Toronto City Councillor. I was making a presentation in the chambers on a very small issue, but one important to me at the time. Everyone was almost asleep before it even was my turn to speak, and gave me little attention, except for one Councillor. He listened, he got enthused, he asked questions, he thanked me for coming. He was the only one. I walked out thinking to myself ... who was that guy ? It was Jack. The next time, he was dressed up as William Lyon Mackenzie for some reason. Kissed my baby daughter. Miss him.
