Major doctrinal issues in this song. Learning to live right and suffer DOES NOT give eternal life. The Bible says, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us.” That’s in Romans. The Bible also states that salvation is “a gift of God, not of works let any man should boast.” If you are depending on your works at all, you are not trusting in Christ and are not on your way to heaven.

Thank you for coming by to listen to my babies. As the Spiritual Advisor (Mother) for the Southern University Gospel Choir- your comment deserves a reply. I pray that if you are seeking answers to why the lyrics of this song are biblical, you can find clarity in my response. When I see Jesus- was presented (to the best of my knowledge) as early as 1981 to the Thomas Dorsey convention- officially known as the National Convention of Choirs and Choruses but the most popular version (that I know) was recorded in 1983 by Douglas Miller. This version that SUGC is singing has been updated and, as the caption reflects, was in the style that Alabama A&M Gospel Choir presented it. With that being said, the lyrics of the song are older than everyone in that choir, yet I thought they executed the meaning behind the song with excellence and with great conviction. One of the young men that sang that night, went to see Jesus a few days after this recording, so this video has even more meaning for us (the Southern University Gospel Choir family). I know that this is not personal for you, but it is for us, so I wanted to add context to why we are so passionate about this video, this song, and this message. You mentioned doctrinal error, so I wanted to address that concern. Elder Ernest Bowman works very hard to make sure the songs that are taught are both musically fitting and spiritually sound. The lyrics- (Have also varied a few times throughout the years) I’ve learned how to live holy (Original lyrics were “I mean to live holy”) I’ve learned how to live right I’ve learned how to suffer For if I suffer I shall gain eternal life- So let’s consider- "If we suffer, we shall also reign with him : if we deny him, he also will deny us.” - 2 Timothy 2:12 Deny us where? But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father who is in Heaven. __Matthew 10:33 Therefore, if we want to “see Jesus” we must be willing to suffer for Him, that we can reign with Him. The Apostle Paul said, “I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal life” (2 Timothy 2:10). He further lists all the suffering he has undergone for the cause of Christ and concluded- Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:8). Therefore, the choir is biblically and doctrinally correct in their presentation that if we suffer with Christ, the benefit is eternal life. We struggle as humans to deny our flesh (that causes suffering), to be talked about, to endure hardships, to endure pain…but our HOPE and the good news (the Gospel message) is SEEING JESUS! After, we have SUFFERED- But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. Seeing JESUS finally one day, makes all of THIS worth it. Hallelujah.
