so happy to see some appropriately dressed tourists! It boggles my mind why most tourists wear sleeveless tops in South-East-Asia, even though it's totally inappropriate and disrespectful. I am Half-Indonesian and I have wondered for a long time how otherwise nice and respectful people are totally oblivious to the fact that the way they dress is unacceptable in many countries.

Well, thank you... but it just so happens that I wore a tshirt because of a new tattoo I got while in Malaysia. I often wear sleeveless shirts because, to be honest, i don't find it disrespectful at all and S.E.A is very hot. What I DO find inappropriate are the tourist who think it's okay to go shirtless and wear bikinis when they AREN'T at the beach. I realize S.E.A is a modest part of the world and think I dress appropriately. 😊

@@wattstraveling For me, the safest way to determine how much skin to show is to look at the locals and what they are wearing, so I can know what is considered appropriate in that country. But I know most travellers don't see it this way and I am trying to come to terms with it. Would honestly love to understand it though 🙂
@wattstraveling

@renatagiovanna1708 I respect YOUR choice to wear what you wear. I don't feel that showing your arms is disrespectful at all, just different cultures. If you came to Canada would you wear cutoff shorts and a sleeveless shirt?..... because that's what locals wear? I'm going to guess, no..... it's all in what you're used to and the different cultures we were raised in. No one is right or wrong, it's just different... and I can respect that. 😊
@renatagiovanna1708

@@wattstraveling Thanks for discussing this with me. I respect your view but as I said, would also love to understand it. I guess the way people dress in Canada is not very different from how they dress in Germany, where I live. I don't think that wearing a normal t-shirt here will offend anyone even if many Germans, including me, wear sleeveless tops in the summer. Because I do think that there is a slight difference between showing too little skin (which normally doesn't bother anyone) and showing too much skin, which can be considered disrespectful even here if you cross a certain border. I expect tourists who come to my country to respect our decency borders, so I also try to respect the decency border of another country, even if does not coincide with mine. Certainly one could also say that there is no right or wrong way to dress, and everyone should have the right to dress how they feel comfortable, I totally get that, but this is just my view and how I personally feel about it...

It's a big culture shock for them including Americans. Malaysians are as much foreign to them as Durians to most westerners. This is a rare adventurous nice couple traveling in this part of Asia. The art in the market depict how things were probably in 80s and older. The old days. That chicken meal its Ayam berempah traditionally the chicken is marinated with a blend of lemon grass and turmeric and other spices. The lemon grass can be quite fibrous when fried its crispy and gives a savory flavor but its not chicken floss. We do have chicken and even beef floss called serunding they are not served in this manner but as its own side dish. As for vendors, Malaysia has a lot of migrant workers that don't speak English or barely they usually avoid talking because they may not know how to respond nor understand you. The owners are always Malaysian and are more likely to speak English and converse with you. If you see 20 workers i wouldn't be surprised if all of them were migrant workers and just 1 Malaysian boss (may not even be the owner but assistant to the owner).

@20:18. That man did not understand the term "one of each". For street peddlers, that's quite an advance English. You should say "Ini satu, ini satu" or "one and one" while pointing at one each. Fun fact. @23:27 Do you see that man in a blue shirt carry a pole on his shoulder with two baskets at each end? That's KANDAR. In the old days they sell rice (i.e NASI) and all its gravy/curry in the basket. That's where the name NASI KANDAR come from. @23:50 We normally pour the gravy on the rice. You did it the other way round... no problemo. It still work. I've seen people mixed the gravy and the rice in his mouth. 🤣🤣 @26:53 Yes... you're right in your observation. As a local, I experienced the same thing. Usually, imho, the salespersons in a mall, they do not want to bother their customers with unwanted questions or to appear pushy. Some of them are not quite proficient in English. Although they generally understand what you're saying, they will try to avoid having conversation with you. And some of them have been quite long in the service that they can tell window-shoppers from genuine buyers. But then again, many of them do not have formal training in the service industry and may be downright dispassionate. @30:35 Yup. It is MALL-aysia. 😂

Just to clarify about what Jay had rant. Some locals are timid & shy, they were very scared they can't communicate with you fluently.. it has always been our people downsides, they have lesser confidence meeting foreigners if they're not good with english. some others, are somewhat, not locals. they are foreign workers where english was not included in their education. of course there are people who does not really care to speak even though their english are broken... 😉
@wattstraveling
@wattstraveling 3 ай бұрын
I can understand that but a smile goes a long way.... and EVERYONE here says, don't worry Malaysians speak English and don't be afraid to ask locals.... then I get messages like this saying they don't like to speak to foreigners? Doesn't that seem confusing.....? And it's not only speaking.... but it's body language, eye contact..... some people (in service oriented jobs.... in malls, specifically) don't even seem to want to help?.... that's what Jay's rant was about.

@@wattstraveling not everyone says that all Malaysians can speak English, and that includes me.. that's the reality.. by the way, thank you for saying it in the video. some locals can't accept, that there are still more areas to improve... they just wanna hear the good things & some youtubers use that as their advantage to get more subscribers & likes...

Usually, we just direct translate into English that might have different meaning than what we really want to say 😅 For example, you might hear "mix it all together" regarding food, what we actually mean is "eat everything one with the other".
