You’re correct that most people pronounce it with a soft g like in ginger, but they are all wrong. The guys name is Sugi with a hard g, so the mineral is pronounced soo-ghee-lite.

I was told Sugilite is pronounced as “soo-juh-lite”. The g is pronounced like a soft “j”.

@ : A lot of people think that, but they’re wrong.😌 The standard for naming minerals is to name them after their discoverer…and the G sound in Ken-ichi Sugi (a Japanese petrologist) is pronounced soo-ghee, so hard G sound. But whatever. I’m not losing any sleep over the way people pronounce words. Just thought I’d offer up the mineralogically accurate way to pronounce it if anyone was interested.
