I recently bought a Suhr Hombre, which is a great fender brownface type of amp. It is great sounding and well built, but is it right for you?

Had this one for about a year now… it is really a fantastic amp and I haven’t really GAS’d for other amps since I got this. This is the one I use in my band. I’ve gigged with both silverface and blackface Fender amps earlier, so in my opinion the only thing making them more versatile is the built-in reverb… Tip: The ToneKing Ironman Mini II attenuator fits like a glove in the back and unlike any other attenuator I’ve tried this one does as promised… and I really recommend it because this amp is loud 🤘🏻

Thank you for the honest review and especially stressing the fact that it’s a very specific amp for specific reasons. This isnt meant for “clean” tones and without a sound man running your system .. “turning down” your guitars volume to clean up doesn’t help. If you want clean tones.. buy a fender deluxe reverb.

Great demo! Thanks for sharing your views. I hear a lot of people talk about how this stock amp (with 12AX7's) lacks headroom, but I've found that to be largely untrue, especially with single-coils. It's no PRRI or Tone King Imperial, but mine stays relatively clean with a Tele or Strat up through Volume settings of 3-5. Of course, with humbuckers, it's another story.

Great review. I bought a Hombre after watching the Peach guitars demo. I love the sound and the way it responds. It's got a 3D sound. I love the way dialing in the other channel volume has an effect on the overall sound. For bedroom/home use I have found a good tweed in a box pedal with the level down does the trick, I've also been using a Friedman small box lately. Great stuff. Can't wait to get out playing it.

Don't fret about not having a standby switch. In fact, amps with valve rectification do not need standby switches at all. These are redundant and sometimes, even detrimental to the well-being of some of the components (e.g. filter caps). However, having no standby switch when having diodes rather than valve rectification is not a good idea. The Hombre has a 5AR4 so no worries! BTW, my 5F2-A style amp sounds similar at a more reasonable volume (albeit with no tremolo).

If you find it too loud and not enough clean headroom you can use a lower gain preamp tube such as a 5751 or even a 12AY7. I’m pretty sure this will solve your problem. Swapping to a less efficient speaker will also reduce the loudness (but not the clean headroom). An attenuator will not help with the headroom and is unnecessary for an amp of this size if you know what you’re doing.

Adjust your Mic gain for loud volume. You made it sound bad. People will think that shitty tone is coming out of the amp. It's breaking up but your gsin pn the Mic is critical for recording FYI. Watch other vids folks. It's a great amp

I have one and it is not too loud for gigging (and yes, volume is a big issue nowadays and at the places I play ) I don't turn it up much beyond 3 (not 3 o'clock) with a telecaster , input 1, no pedals. Just out of curiosity, I tried to replace the speaker with a Jensen C12N and a Eminence GA12. Both did not fit.

Nice review but I never saw it plugged into the bright channel. Definitely interested in one of these.

Definitely had it in the bright channel at some points - sorry if i cropped out that part of the shot. Oops! It is a wonderful amp - if it is a style you like, I am sure you would enjoy the amp!

Love it, on the fence vs the 57 custom deluxe. Any thoughts...
@JamesOnGuitar

Hi, that's a good decision to have to make! The 57, being a tweed deluxe, will compress and crunch differently and probably have less headroom. The Hombre is a deluxe type brownface amp so you can get some sparkling cleans before it starts to break up. But I haven't played the 57 custom deluxe so I can't say for sure, sorry!

@@JamesOnGuitar That was my worry...57 sounded great, but squishy, compressed more than the hombre which sounded more full.

Sounds like a kazoo. The Cutthroat Audio Down Brownie destroys this on every level.

HI James. Just came across your channel.....love it. Would you say the Hombre is it's own thing compared to the Two Rock Classic Reverb Sig. (CRS) amp? I already own the Two Rock CRS 50w head and matching 212 cab. Recently put Celestion Alnico Creams in the cab.....nice upgrade!!! I've been on an amp craze as I prefer amp drive over pedals. I've acquired the popular amp tones Fender/dumble (Two Rock CRS), Vox (Matchless HC30), Marshall (Dr. Dan 1986 bass head). For high gain fun i bought a used Mesa Dual rectifier. Have fun with your gear and keep the vids coming.

Thanks! Great collection you have there too! Yup, the Hombre is definitely its own thing and unlike any other amp i’ve tried. Very specific, not an all purpose amp, but glorious in its focus imho 👍🏼 How is that Matchless? Cheers

Also, that is interesting - changing the speakers. As i have two of the cabs i could do some interesting tests!

@@JamesOnGuitar Thats right you have 2 Two Rock cabs. I highly recommend the Cream Alnico's. Brings much more definition...you can hear more of the strings being hit. Overall a very balanced tone imho. That's what i was after so the cab works with all my amps. Quite pleased. I started with one Alnico and soon after got another. The Matchless HC 30 (non reverb) is different to all the other amps in the collection. It's very loud for 30 watts. An attenuator is a must. The ef86 channel is something else. Lots of overdrive there. It compresses as you turn it up as to be expected. The HC30 really lets the sound thru of your guitar....meaning you know when it's a Tele, vs LP vs a Strat. It can get bright but there a cut knob to tame things but it also comes down to the speakers you have as well (hence the Alnicos). Master volume really doesn't work as one would assume...think of it as more as the Contour knob on the Two Rock CRS. where it tweaks treble/bass...but HC30 MV fine tunes the "drive" aspects of things. Overall a great amp!!! it's also quite heavy. Built like a tank. Quality build. Mine isn't going anywhere.

Is it loud enough to gig with then?
@JamesOnGuitar
@JamesOnGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
for any small to medium gig, pretty sure it would be fine. plenty of headroom, but you would want to get it off the ground to avoid some over-bassy sounds

The amp is demoed completely out of its element and most certainly compares favorable to the original. For the guy below Its a 6g3 circuit for christ sake and not a Princeton. Want a Princeton get a Princeton great amps but sure as hell will not do what the Hombre does. Quality of tone isn't there either. And the day they make a pedal that sound and feel like it I'll eat my Marshall stack. Without condiments!
