It wasn't really fire, the salty water just got so conductive, that the bloody thing started arcing out. That's what looked like fire, but it wasn't really flames. But he could have gotten electrocuted even not being grounded (standing in rubber shoes) with the melting cable he was touching. If the two conductors only melted out of the insulation and touched his wet salty hand, his fingers might have just gotten ripped off or at least badly burned :D

@@RaaynML Skip to end for the in short Reactions that make hydrogen: H₂O + e⁻ -> OH⁻ + 1/2H₂ Na⁺ + e⁻ -> Na Na + H₂O -> NaOH + 1/2H₂ The first is direct electrolysis of water, the second is electrolysis of sodium cations to elemental sodium and the immediate reaction of elemental sodium with water. The difference? None for these purposes but it may matter in other electrolysis systems. I'm not really sure which is dominant, I do however know that without the ions the reaction. Along with that happening at the anode there is also chlorine being made at the cathode (the cathode takes electrons/oxidizes things, and Cl⁻ is easier to oxidize than OH⁻ Lose Electrons Oxidation - LEO as in "LEO says GER"): Cl⁻ - e⁻ -> 1/2Cl₂ And finally just for completeness the proper mechanism on all of the reactions that generate 1/2X₂ is Cl⁻ - e⁻ -> Cl· H₂O + e⁻ -> OH⁻ + H· (Na is an effective source of e⁻, creating Na⁺ as it is used... very effective considering the explosions it causes) 2X· -> X₂ (X = H, Cl) (the dot on the Cl·, H·, and X· notates a free radical/unpaired electrons. If these radicals weren't separated you would end up with a large amount of HCl being created as opposed to just Cl₂ and H₂... which would immediately react with the NaOH to make water + NaCl) So to answer your question: The salt just acts as a catalyst for the reaction, you could use any sufficiently electropositive cation to create the H₂. Magnesium sulfate is a safer option because it doesn't make Cl₂ on the cathode, just O₂
