Ideally you should have at least 3 of the top 5 cards in your overcalled suit ,at least.

2 level oc agreements with my partners promise at least a 5 card decent suit and an opening hand. mho

Many thanks for this Russell - I also overcall at the two-level on a 5-card if the suit quality is very good - I call this a ‘5-card suit that’s worth 6’ (maybe KQJ9x). I try to gauge whether it's good enough to play opposite a potential misfit - As ever, having a sound partnership agreement seems to work best!

how about a 3NT instead of 3 diamonds?

Hi Vera, many thanks for your question. A 3NT bid from North would be too high as South has only shown 10+ HCP, so not enough points between the 2 hands to make the contract. Even 2NT looks risky as N/S have no stop (winning card) in the opponents' heart suit. I hope this is helpful.
