Synopsis: Sujata (Nutan) gets adopted by the Chowdhury family, which consists of dad Upendranath (Tarun Bose); mom Charu (Sulochana Latkar); and a daughter, Rama (Shashikala), and is treated just like a daughter. Sujata grows up in this caring and nuturing household and leads a very comfortable life. Both Sujata and Rama are now of marriageable age. A young man, Adhir (Sunil Dutt), comes to the Chowdhury household with a view to marry. He meets Sujata and falls in love with her. When he informs his aunt (Lalita Pawar) of this decision, she is aghast, as she knows that Sujata is not only of a lower caste but also an untouchable, and she wants Adhir to marry Rama, or will not permit him to live with her. While at the Chowdhury household, Charu wants Sujata to leave the house immediately, as she will have nothing to do with her anymore. Will Adhir and Sujata be ever married or will they be two more victims to the caste system?

आँखों से आंसू छलक आये । बहोत बहोत बहोत सुन्दर फिल्म है । जितनी भी तारीफ़ की जाए कम हीं होगी । बिमल रॉय जी की मास्टरपीस फिल्म। समाज को आईना दिखाती ये फिल्म । हमें सिख देती है की एक इंसान को दूसरे इंसानों की जात-पात, ऊँच-नीच कभी नहीं देखनी चाहिए । कोई इंसान अपने जाति या धर्म से नहीं बल्कि अपने संस्कारों और कर्मो से पहचाना जाता है । 20..... के दौर में कौन देख रहा है इस फिल्म को ??

1959...आह! 9 साल का था, जब रेडियो सिलोन ,(जिसे बाद में श्रीलंका ब्राडकास्टिंग कारपोरेशन का नाम दिया गया ) पर इस प्यारी फ़िल्म के गीत गूंजा करते थे, और यह गीत आज भी मुझे विचारों की उन्हीं गालियों में थिरकने पर मजबूर कर देते हैं । सोचता हूँ, क्या मरने के बाद भी 1950 और 70 के दशकों के बीच की नायाब फिल्मों के लाजवाब गीतों जिन्हें मैं लोरियों का नाम देता हूँ, क्या इन सब की यादों को अपने साथ ले जा पाऊंगा ? काश मेरी यादों की बारात भी मेरे साथ चल पाती ।

ये फिल्म 72 में देखी थी जब मैं 11 साल का था तब इतनी समझ नहीं थी , आज इसे तकरीबन 52 साल बाद दुबारा देखा, देखते हुए कई बार आंखे नम हुई. इतने सालो बाद भी हालात कोई ज्यादा नहीं बदले.

I am a brahmin - I was told by my birth. Sujata told me I am a Human! Thank you for uploading the movie and watched it when I am in my fifties. No words but tears of Realism. Spell bound and lost. Never believed in any religion because living in New Zealand for 32 years and education already enlightened me before about this. The Movie just did a cherry on the top. Its 12.26am here and I do not know how to sleep tonight. So, sweet dreams to humanity. Gandhiji, Lord Budha, Swami Vivekanand never die and live after death in our thoughts and minds and will bestow upon us their divine teachings. Peace for Humanity.

This movie was really a blockbuster movie as it was continuously screened for 100 days in Mumbai. The theaters were not so small like today's. Bimal Roy celebrated the 100 days by a great firework on Shivaji Park. I was five years old then, but was taken to see the fire work.

यह फिल्म की सोच आज से 63 साल बाद पहले यानि 1959 की सोच के साथ विमल राय ने बनाई थी जिसमें संदेश साफ साफ दिया था कि इंसान केवल इंसान होता है, ना कोई ऊंचा ना कोई नीचा, भावनात्मक व्यवहार एक इंसान की ही होती है, जिसमें सभी कलाकारों ने अपने बेहतरीन अभिनय से हमें फिल्म देखने और रुलाने में मजबूर कर दिया, सच कहें तो हमें भी भावनात्मक रुप से इंसान बनने और सोचने पर की प्रश्नवाचक संभाल खड़े कर दिए हैं आज भी हम वहीं 2022 में आजादी के अमृत महोत्सव के 75 वे साल में खड़े हैं और हमने इतनी तरक्की के बाद भी और भी पीछे जाने के लिए लौट रहे हैं
