Sonmarg to dras kargil....
The Dras valley starts from the base of the Zojila pass, the Himalayan gateway to Ladakh. I started enjoying this unique picturesque landscape that i had never witnessed before and was mesmerized by a different view of Himalaya. The shadow of cloud gave an awesome appearance on those barren mountains as compared to other mountains. The road conditions were very good with less twists and turns and well laid tarmac. It felt like i was passing through a dreamy world. Reached to drass by covering a distance of 63 KMs. Dras is the second most coldest inhabited place in the world and is also famous for the epicentre of 1999 Kargil war. A traveller should leave all expectations of city behind while on a tough tour like this which largely remains uninhabited and cut off for half of the year from outside world.
The road from Srinagar to Kargil is a part of national highway 1D, also famously known as Srinagar Leh Highway. The highway actually starts at Uri and then runs through Baramula, Srinagar, and Kargil before terminating at Leh. It has now been renamed National Highway 1.
The entire length of the road is about 500 kilometers but the distance between Srinagar and Leh is about 410 kilometers. The distance between Srinagar and Kargil is 202 kilometers and the town acts as a midpoint between Srinagar and Leh. It is a popular halting point for people traveling from Kashmir to Ladakh.
The road is a mix of good, bad and ugly. The ugly part is mostly limited around the Zoji La pass. For the rest of the distance, the road either remains to be good or average.
••••Drass......
Dras is a hill station in the Kargil district of the union territory of Ladakh in India. It is on the NH 1 (former name NH 1D before renumbering of all national highways) between Zoji La pass and Kargil town. A tourist hub for its high altitude trekking routes and tourist sites, it is often called "The Gateway to Ladakh".The government's official spelling of the town is Drass.
Traditionally, Dras is known as Hem-babs, which means "snow land" with the word "Hem" meaning snow. The average temperature of Dras in winter is -20 degrees Celsius.
Dras is often called "The Gateway to Ladakh". It is at a height of 10,800 feet (3,300 m)Dras lies in the centre of the valley of the same name (Dras valley). Dras is 140 km from Srinagar and 63 km from Sonmarg. Kargil town is further 56 km after Dras on the national highway NH 1 from Srinagar towards Leh.In the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir (1846-1947), Dras was part of the Kargil tehsil of the Ladakh wazarat.
