For the past decade, Sullivan Fortner has been stretching deep-rooted talents as a pianist, composer, bandleader, and uncompromising individualist. The GRAMMY Award-winning artist received international praise as both key player and producer for his collaborative work on The Window (Mack Avenue, 2018), alongside multi-GRAMMY winner, vocalist-composer Cecile McLorin Salvant. As a solo leader, he has released Moments Preserved (Decca, 2018) and Aria (Impulse!, 2015) to critical acclaim, and he’s only getting started. This past year, Fortner earned recognition in multiple DownBeat Critics Poll categories, winning first place in Rising Star Piano and Rising Star Jazz Artist.

Whole set is incredible! Standouts for me included technique on “Love for Sale” in the solo section - inspiring and almost unimaginable depth of control and Liszt level chops~ the reworked version of Minute Waltz is extremely cool 😅😮 🙏

Two thumbs up for a fabulous pianist and great performance. However, I can't seem to listen to this recording- in places, there's an interruption every few seconds. Anybody else?

This dude is a great pianist, but one thing that gets me about the jazz scene is the low level of production values. It seems like all the efforts go into the raw musicality and a generally low bar of quality when relating that musicality to an audience, whether that's live or recorded.

A lot of jazz musicians even some that are well known don't have the money to pay full time managers or producers. They spend their time working either on playing, rehearsals or searching for work by themselves. The gigs really don't pay especially in the US so they have to play a lot and invest most of the time they have searching for gigs and playing. Most of the time the quality of the material depends if the dude playing is into audio engineering and stuff like that, which doesn't seems to be Sullivan's priority.
