Suma Qamaña 2014 Bolivian Festival 14: Morenada

Suma Qamaña celebrates the spirit of "Living Well" in this four day festival hosted by the Embassy of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, highlighting the indigenous cultures of Bolivia through dance and song.
In this segment, Morenada Tricobol USA perform the Morenada. The origin of the Morenada dance goes back to the ties when Black slaves were forced to work the mining industry of the colonial times. In that context, there are several interpretations about the heavy gear of the "moreno." For instance, it represents the opulence of his master who whore an expensive outfit full of pearls and shiny accessories given the high price refiners paid for the slaves. Also, the distinctive sound of the rattles alludes to the excruciating marches of Black slaves who were brought and introduced to the mining fields of Potosi in chains and often carrying heavy loads.

La Morenada was born in the Andean Altiplano where the western lands of Bolivia are located, mainly in Oruro y La Paz. However, now this popular dance has been enjoyed by Peruvian and Chileans. The Bolivian dance is also enjoyed in Europe and Japan.
