, also known as lyonization, occurs in female somatic cells early in embryonic development. This process ensures that females, who have two X chromosomes, do not have twice the amount of X chromosome gene products as males, who have one X chromosome. In contrast, female gametes (oocytes) do not undergo X chromosome inactivation because they need to retain both X chromosomes in an active state for potential fertilization and subsequent embryonic development. Each oocyte contains a single active X chromosome. When an oocyte is fertilized by a sperm, which can provide either an X or a Y chromosome, the resulting zygote will have either two X chromosomes (and potentially develop into a female) or one X and one Y chromosome (and potentially develop into a male). The X chromosome inactivation will then occur in the somatic cells of the female embryo.
