Sumi gaeshi (and yoko sumi gaeshi, the variation we're working on here) is an incredibly useful technique for jiu-jitsu in the standing position. We can look for it any time our partner elects to connect themselves to us (here we use the collar tie, but yoko sumi works well as a counter to the single leg also).
The idea is that by moving our center of gravity below theirs, then employing a lifting leg, we can displace even a much bigger and stronger person. The connection which allows us to hit sumi also makes the escape following the throw even harder than usual.
Here we follow up with a mount and an immediate juji gatame (armlock) to close the sequence.
