2006 아버지를 위한.. 조수미의 아버지는 한명밖에 없는 딸에 대한 사랑이 지극했다. 집안이 힘들었던 시절 당뇨병으로 고생하면서도 힘든 내색을 하지 않았다. 2006년 파리에서 중요한 독창회가 있던 날 갑자기 아버지가 돌아가셨다는 소식을 듣고는 짐을 싸서 바로 귀국하려 했으나 어머니가 "많은 사람들과의 약속을 지키는게 너의 본분이고 노래를 해서 그 음악회를 아버지께 바치는게 너의 본분이다"라고 말했다. 그래서 어렵게 파리 공연을 마치고 나니 눈물이 흘러내렸고 앵콜곡으로 와 한국가곡을 부른 후, 관객들의 박수가 그치지 않자 "고국에서 아버지 장례식이 열리고 있다. 하늘에 계신 아버지께 노래를 바친다"며 슈베르트의 를 슬픔을 삼키며 마지막 곡으로 불렀다.[4] 노래를 마친 조수미는 눈물을 보이고, 파리 샤틀레극장을 메운 청중들은 모두 기립박수를 보냈고 그들중에는 눈물을 흘리는 관객들도 적지 않았다.[18]

She got a call from her mother before the performance. After she sang a Korean song, she said her father's funeral is being proceeded in Korea while she is performing. Her mother said " You have to keep an appointment with many audiences, and dedicate the performance to your father. These are your duties." The reason why she sang songs there.

er father had passed away just before she performed Ave Maria at Chatelet, Paris. When she learned that her father died, she wanted to pack up and attend her father's funeral. Her mother reminded her of the promise with her audiences, and said that it was best for her father that she performed and dedicated it to her father.Her performance was dedicated to her father and released as a DVD titled "Sumi Jo in Paris - For my Father"

음악은 장르 구분없이 누구나 즐길 수 있기에 음악이라고 불려집니다. 즐기거나 감상할 수 없으면 음악이라고 할 수 없죠. 비록 사람에 따라 선호하고 불호하는 스타일의 음악이 있을 수 있으나 음악의 한 장르를 감히 폄하하는 것은 옳지 못하다고 봅니다. 우리의 것에 맞게 우리의 몸에서 나온 것들을 진정으로 즐길 줄 모를지언정 폄하하는 것은 타당하지 못합니다. 받아들이는 데에 쉬움과 어려움이 있는 것이지 음악이라고 규정된 것에는 그 어떤 귀천이나 상하가 없다고 생각합니다. 누구나 듣고 감상하고 즐길 수 있고 감동받을 수 있으며 흥을 돋굴 수 있다고 생각합니다. 음악을 높고 낮음과 동서양으로 구분지으신다면, 극단적이고 조금 비약있는 이야기를 해보겠습니다. 태초의 뿌리가 서양의 왕실과 귀족들의 귀와 행사를 위해 만들어진 클래식이 고귀할지, 아니면 유교이념을 바탕으로 세워진 국가와 그 유교이념을 받아들인 왕조에서 예악사상이란 이름으로 나라와 백성을 다스리는 통치이념의 차원에서 음악을 받아들인 동양의 음악이 고귀할까요? 우리 모두가 다양성과 고유성을 바탕으로 만들어 낸 것이 음악입니다. 이것을 깨버리고 이분법적으로 구분짓기 시작한다면 안될 일 입니다.
