From 1973 till 1993 twenty long years crossed Pacific to and from Japan and West coast US/Canada and mostly in winter time, confronted severe storms all the time, life was terrible on board log ships, always heart on the lip situation. That was life we enjoyed too at the age of 77 years i reminicsent

Must have been miserable been around you, it doesn't seem that you enjoyed it, rather just endured it somehow. :-(. I loved my time at sea as 3rd and 2nd officer of the deck. Beautiful desolation of the open ocean, adventure of the storms, visiting foreign and faraway places...Some love this life, like me, lots of are unfortunately miserable.

They do make the current world work but that’s not necessarily a good thing. Without such widespread global shipping I think people would ironically be more food secure and have stronger local economies. Not to mention there would be a lot less sweatshops and horrible working conditions for people working to produce goods for the developed nations. Not to mention more jobs in those nations.

When I was a kid in the 1960's we use to watch these ships from Japan come to the ports in Kalama via the Columbia River. My dad was stationed in Japan during WWII, so it was interesting for him. It is fun to see how long these ships had to sail to get there and home. Thank you!

This brings back some memories. Sailing through the straights of Juan de Fuca for hours and hours where it's as still as a sheet of glass and then greeted by monster waves the minute you hit the Pacific. Nothing better than spending days (or weeks) at sea and finally reaching land. That feeling you get when you finally set foot on soil again - so nice. And after weeks of heavy seas, the sea legs kick in so you end up walking goofy during the port visit.

Yes you can. Not every ship takes passengers. Contact ship agents and see who can take you.

I don't think it's dangerous these days. Only one ship sank in the pacific recently and that's because it was loaded really top heavy (a cattle ship).

Astoria isn't in Washington. It is absolutely in Oregon. The Colombia river is the border between Washington and Oregon... that port was on the Washington side (right bank), but Astoria is in Oregon, not Washington Honestly, nearly all of the cargo ports are on the Oregon side of the river, but the couple that *are* on the WA side are pretty big!

In emergency moving ship have to move deep slow.we have to put reverse acceleration it mean we have to put brakes wave machine when we have to Stop this called brakes only in emergency.we have to use reverse moving

Though this video is a year old, I live in Portland, Oregon, and know the exact location that this ship was docked and loaded on the Columbia River near Portland. The river also devides the states of Washington and Oregon. It's a very beautiful place to live. Thank you for sharing, and safe journeys. 😊

When very I traveled with my family on old Liberty ships from New Orleans to Buenaventura, Colombia. There were no railings,just chains. Everything covered in tar. Check out how tar was used by sailors and why their uniforms have that flap on the back of the collar.
