And from Tadano's perspective, Komi was the first person to NOT take him for granted. Everyone else, starting with Najimi, and even his own family, take him for granted. Not that he has any problem with that, but Komi not doing that, he learned that it's such a pleasurable feeling, which is why he's there for her. Of course, Tadano is there for everyone, given that he can read the mood with supreme accuracy (which is why everyone takes him for granted, knowing that he'll always "get it").

Slice of life, RomCom anime has NO business being this touching. Here, in this moment, it wasn’t about Komi slowly falling for Tadano, and it wasn’t about Tadano becoming Chadano. It wasn’t about Najimi doing whatever it is he/her/it does, nor was it about Yamai being a complete lesbian Yandere stalker creep. This scene is genuine, pure and speaks depth about what humanity really is in its most basic form: One person reaching out to another to help them overcome their social fears (in this case)

He didn't have a crush on her initially. While he did think she's beautiful (just as everyone else did), but not anything beyond that. However, from this scene onwards, he got to know her true self -- shy, but kind, fun-loving, enthusiastic, girl. And as time went on, he began to fall in love with her (and she began to fall in love with him). At some point, they were so into each other that when they were away from one another for a long time, they mutually had uncontrollable neediness towards each other.

I know it probably an obvious statement to make, so apologies if someone else has already written it down, but one of the great things that I really love about this show and the manga is that Tadano just sees Komi as a person, not a perfect angel on some pedestal like most of her classmates (at least at the start) do. They all admire her, but only the outer "version" that Komi seems to, rather unintentionally, project: a very calm and collected individual who dislikes interaction. Whereas, in reality, she is crying out for the chance to make friends and have a social life, but her anxiety makes her feel unable to. But with the help of Tadano, Komi manages to come out of her shell, and begins to flourish as a result. And that's all because one person didn't just see someone who was untouchable, but instead they saw another soul in need, who really just wanted a friend. I'm glad this was my first proper anime. What a great one to start with. Sorry for the long ramble all. Have a good one. :)

That anime has a special place in my heart, it literally healed my depression and helped me see the bright side of the world. Two years ago i was afraid to make friends in high school and all the pressure from the surroundings made me hate living. Then i decided to give this a shot and from the very first second everything changed. I wanted to go to school and i even tried to make friends. I wanted to leave the house more often and every time something bad happened or i felt i wasn't enough or i was the problem, i would watch this or listen to the soundtrack non stop. It was the only way to clear my mind and relax. Now, two years later, I'm still not good at making friends just with anyone like how i used to do but at least i know that i can try and if anything bad happens I'll just come back here to relax and then I'll try again and again. There's always someone out there who'll accept you just like how you are so never give up and don't be afraid to try.

It's fascinating how a scene with no spoken words can communicate so many feelings. It reminds of a lyric from the opening theme of Violet Evergarden, "The words are never spoken. It was strange, even though I left that room with a heavy heart, he promptly responded back in the same manner. Even though I didn't want to talk he was there to greet me with a smile as though saying "It's okay to be scared, I won't force you, if it makes you feel better, do it in the manner that you are comfortable with". I wonder was it the atmosphere he was projecting or was it his smile? I dunno it was probably both, and it was probably both of those that gave me the courage to respond back to him in turn. I believe that this is such a powerful scene. As a Komi fan, I respect the initial steps of Tadano becoming Komi's first friend. I don't take it as an ulterior motive but as just a kind heart. One side of the party taking that step knowing that the other has social anxiety makes this scene so lovely. Reason why Katai is attached to Tadano is the same reason why Komi is attached.

This scene proves that Tadano is the person Komi needed in her life, because he did the best thing possible: by writing on the blackboard to respond to her, he adapted to her difficulty because he understands her and wants to support her. This is what you need to do with very shy and isolated people: don't force them, adapt to their way of communicating and help them little by little, no matter how long it takes. I wish I had received such help when I was at school. Very shy people are often misjudged and misunderstood because they are treated as social misfits when it is very often society itself that is the cause of their isolation.

I think Evangeline McDowell said it the best. "Little bit of courage -- that's the true magic." Think about it. When Komi was walking away, it was the little bit of courage from Tadano of initiating the chalkboard conversation that allowed everything. Then Komi turned around and worked up the courage to actually respond. Then when Tadano said he'll be her first friend (that was done naturally, so courage was not a factor), Komi worked up the courage to accept. And everything from then on worked out so well, for both of them, from each other AND with others.
