I haven't read this story, but I am going to since the original version is available online (the link is in the Wikipedia article for those who are interested). It reminds me of a song by Bob Dylan called "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll", about a guy who assaulted an African American barmaid with a toy cane for taking longer than he wanted to bring him his drink, which ended up causing her death a few hours later. He got 6 months and a fine. This all happened in 1963, 2 years before I was born. He was convicted the day Martin Luther King gave his memorable "I Have A Dream" speech...it all seems so distant if you haven't lived through it, but it seems like only yesterday if you have. Excellent summary.

Really cool insight in this comment. I was thinking the same thing about how this feels so long ago, but when you consider the dates, it really wasn’t. You might also like The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. Thanks for the feedback!!

Woof. That's a rough story. My mom and her sisters used to live in the South during those awful Jim Crow days: I'm glad they got out and moved up North.

Yeah, it’s crazy how that really wasn’t that long ago.

Great story! I love anything with the Compson family. I'm currently rereading Absalom, Absalom! which once again features Quentin Compson and his father. Can't go wrong with Faulkner. Welcome to Booktube!

Oh wow, what a great breakdown! Love the historical background. I read this awhile ago in The Best American Short Stories of the Centuey and didn't really understand it (and I'm an adult! Haha). Thanks for the analysis!

This was a tricky one to understand for sure. I read it, did some research, and then when I read it again, it made a lot more sense/ really made me appreciate Faulkner’s writing style! Thanks so much for the feedback!
