Learn how to start a conversation, keep it going, build networking skills, and leave a positive impression!
Whether we’re standing in the elevator with a colleague, attending conferences, or simply meeting your child’s new teacher, small talk is a major part of our daily lives. Perhaps you spend your days avoiding these awkward situations because the mere idea of striking up a conversation with a stranger makes your stomach churn. Perhaps you avoid social situations entirely or hide out in bathrooms and hang out at the buffet table to avoid small talk. Maybe the idea of networking makes you sick to your stomach. If this sounds like you, then it’s time to master The Fine Art of Small Talk. Though many of us disregard small talk and find it meaningless, small talk has the power to change our lives. Small talk is the foundation of building meaningful connections with friends and colleagues which can open up opportunities you never thought possible. Once you master small talk, you’ll be guaranteed to build a business, make friends, improve networking skills, get dates, and land jobs. So if you struggle with conversation, it’s time to learn how to feel more comfortable in any type of social situation, from lunch with your boss to a networking conference to a cocktail party where you don’t know a single person. As you read, you’ll learn how small talk can change your life and receive tips and tricks for starting, keeping, and exiting a conversation.

It can make them feel remarkable. 4)Give your name. end of part one 5)Use IceBreakers to start it, use after that use starting statements EG: what a nice restaurant. what do you think about it? 6) talk about the preferred topics of convo 7)Listening: make eye contact, lean forward , nod, smile (True smile with eyes squiks) open ended question, hmmm, eyebrows flintch 8)avoid awkward silence: prepare questions, reminding of last book, ask about recent film. be more specific about the questions.

Finally someone said it! Yes small talk _is_ risky, it risks rejection when our topic turns out to not be interesting enough, while at the same time can't be too interesting that it causes heated opinions. As a newly awakened introvert, even after having the drive to talk I still made a ton of mistakes choosing the wrong topics. I don't want to let these discourage me tho! I might not get these drives again if I give up and recluse again now 💪

Summary **Eye Contact:** 1. Always smile and maintain eye contact. **Self-Introduction:** 2. Whenever you arrive at a new place, always introduce yourself. If you don't, people might think you're a snob who ignores them and doesn't care. **Names:** 3. Always remember names. If you forget a name, don't be embarrassed to ask again and admit that you didn't remember. 4. Also, share your name to ease the burden on the person who might have forgotten. **Small Talk:** 5. In small talk, always ask open-ended and focused questions, like "What did you like about that?" or "Why do you feel that way about it?" 6. Talking to a stubborn child: "How was school?" "Okay." "What did you like most about today?" "I don't know..." "Tell me about one lesson you enjoyed the most today." "Science." "Wow, really? What was so interesting about the lesson?" and so on. **Body Language:** 7. Pay attention to your body language and ensure that you're truly showing the other person that you're listening. **Awkward Silences:** 8. Try to avoid awkward silences: Have a set of questions ready, such as: - What is your favorite book/movie, or what have you read/watched recently? - What's been going on with you since the last time we met? - What's new with your family/wife/kids? - What has changed recently in your life? - Look around the place you're in and draw questions from it: "What brought you here?" or "I hear an accent, where are you from?" 9. If it's hard to find questions, you can use the acronym FORM: Family, Occupation, Recreation, Miscellaneous.
