I was a camp counselor for seven years, and for the last three years I specifically worked with kids and young adults with special needs. This was supposed to be my first summer not going back, but when they cancelled my camp on Friday I was still SO sad for all my campers and friends that were supposed to be spending their summer there. There are so many kids, with special needs or otherwise, who don't fit in at school and don't have close friends at home and spend all year looking forward to camp, where they can be themselves and be understood and feel at home. Even though I wasn't going to be there this year, I miss camp more than ever.

As someone who did some time as senior staff - placing staff in terms of positions/age groups/etc. is one of the most thought about parts of the job! We try and think about where each person would be best suited (plus take into account their interests), as well as trying to be mindful of the dynamic created in each section with the staff and who might work well together.

Not a camp counsellor, but things I've done to make myself feel like I'm at Guides meetings or a Girlguiding residential: 1. I've made s'mores in the oven for my family a couple of times. 2. I've been working on a load of badges for fun (and I'm going to get the badges to put on my blanket and then tell stories to my Guides when we are next able to have a sleepover or camp). 3. Girlguiding had a virtual festival day on Saturday with activity tutorials and interviews with people, and they did indoor den-building and a virtual campfire. I then used the indoor den-building tutorial to make a mini den in my bedroom and slept in it for part of the night (I find getting comfortable on floors to sleep REALLY hard though, so when I found the sun was up at 5am, I decided that was enough). 4. I listened to a Girl Scout campfire songs playlist.
@AllySheehan4 жыл бұрын
S'mores is such a great idea!! I'll definitely need to do that. How do you make your badges?
@67ktb4 жыл бұрын
@@AllySheehan Oh, I'm not making the badges. I'm working on the activities towards them (like this challenge badge from an activity centre in Scotland where I made a mini-zipline for a small soft toy out of my camping mug and some belts, made a mini campsite with toys and folders, did a repurposing project and a few matchstick puzzles), and then buying the badges online. Most of the ones I'll be buying aren't from the national-level shop. You should check and see what's available in Girl Guide communities in Australia and see if there are any badges you want to buy and do. It's a way to pass the time!

thanks for the video Ally !! it really was something I needed to hear today.:) i was meant to return for my third summer in oklahoma and be the head counselor, so I was really looking forward to taking on a new role and was writing down lots of things and ideas throughout the months before lockdown. it was heartbreaking when our camp director told us a month ago they wouldn't let internationals come. my heart broke again for all the campers and fellow counselors whenever they suspended camp 2020 two weeks ago. i was smiling a little when you said you couldn't listen to country music for a while. same happened to me haha i'm now at a point where I started listening to it again. still a weird feeling cause it makes me happy and sad at the same time. I also stopped making my photo album about camp from last year for about 2 months. it sounds so overly dramatic but I just couldn't look at it :D just yesterday night I got it out again and continued, so I guess my heart slowly "adapts" to the situation:) trying to focus on the positive and already starting to clear my way for next year. this was supposed to be my last summer but I can't just finish like that haha. really looking foward to next year and trying to use this year to work hard to be able to return. thanks for all your content ally and all you do! something I read the other day and found very suitable "summer camp is still coming, we're just gonna have to wait a little longer for it. but that's okay, because for those of us that love camp, we're good at waiting for it". have a wonderful day, lots of love from germany ♥

Hi Christin! Firstly, congratulations on your promotion to head counselor! That is a wonderful reflection of you, even if camp had to be postponed this year. Secondly, I totally know how you feel, it's such a journey of acceptance (I sound dramatic but I think you get me) and not a linear one either. Some days I feel like I've made peace with it all but any time I go through photos and videos from last year or talk to my campers, all i want is to be there. Love love love LOVE that quote! Everyone I know is now just making plans for 2021 and getting hype for that Summer instead haha

I’d rather give my campers and fellow counselors a big hug but I’m glad we’re lucky enough nowdays to stay in contact that way. I think a lot about my senior campers whose last year it would have been and I’m glad I’m able to reach out and talk to them about it and comfort them just a little bit at least. from what I’ve heard 2021 is gonna go down in history as the best summer yet ;):D

Was supposed to be my 2nd year at my camp. Camp Agnes Arnold (Texas). Absolutely devastated that I couldn’t go back this year, so much so that I broke down on the phone to CCUSA 😭. Missing my friends so much!!

Oh man, I totally know how you feel, that's heartbreaking!! I'm sure you aren't the only one who has done that. I've heard such wonderful things about Camp Agnes Arnold, what's your role there?
@talleebobbermien-sek18094 жыл бұрын
Agnes Arnold is a tiny Girl Scout Camp (only 13 internationals). I was the only Aussie there last year, which was really fun. All of our counsellors are basically general. I was a lifeguard, canoe instructor and archery instructor. Everyone does a mix of everything and changes each week. So much fun!!

this was going to be my first summer I was placed with ccusa at camp wise. I am so disappointed, not sure what to do next year if to go to a summer camp or uni. for me I feel like it will depend on if we can travel to other places and be free again but if its not then uni might be the path then go to camp after :)

Been waiting for you to talk about this Ally! I’m meant to be returning, I was meant to return last year and I had graduation and things happened and I wasn’t organised enough, so couldn’t go. But this year I was super organised super ready had everything organised and I travelled to Belfast to get my visa a couple days before my appointment and they cancelled it the day before 😭 my Camp cancelled a couple weeks ago now. Which I think was smart but so sad. Thanks for making this video, I started watching you this year as I was getting excited about camp and wanted to get in the spirit

If you are vegan, how did you find the food options at camp? were there whole foods available or mostly greasy / “fast foods” served ( sorry if you have covered this before I’m a new subscriber ☺️)
@AllySheehan4 жыл бұрын
Hey Chelsea, welcome!!! We were sooo spoiled haha, we got a vegan alternative of basically every meal, and a lot of the time my non vegan friends were jealous! I talk in more detail in some of my other camp Q&As about what it was like, but oh my gosh was it good! Usually really healthy too, and then I could add things like fries from the middle of the table :)

honestly knew all along it was a possibility and was just hoping it wouldn’t become a reality. i was really looking forward to this summer more than i usually do though :/ it helps knowing nobody is going rather than my friends having fun without me. my camp is doing virtual activities and mailing craft materials and camp goodies so hopefully that’ll provide enough of a sense of camp. it’s an unfortunate situation but it’ll help me be more appreciative of camp next summer and definitely complain less.

Hey Emma! yes I have spoken about this in a few of my camp videos! They should be under the same playlist as this one :) So far you're on a fantastic track, your studies will be incredibly helpful. If you can find some volunteer work at a YMCA, some babysitting or any more work with kids that will be a great asset too.

I was planning on applying to go in 2021. I don’t have any experience working with kids that can be proven so I was planning on volunteering at a youth centre but I’m worried I won’t have enough time to get experience before applying. Do you think I will?
@AllySheehan4 жыл бұрын
I think the youth centre will give you wonderful experience! We do get a lot of great training during orientation before campers arrive too, but any experience will help. if you can pick up some babysitting or coaching (even assisting) when it's safe to do so, that will help!

Yes you should be able to go during the summer, lots of people at my camp did. Summer at university usually starts in May or early June so if your camp starts in June you should be fine. You can also speak to them about coming to camp a few weeks late if you need to :)
