Phalaenopsis spikes drain out energy from the orchid. To restore this energy, we need to first take care of the orchid.
Phalaenopsis orchids develop secondary spikes from the first one. So if you want to enjoy the blooms of the phalaenopsis orchids once more, you can cut the spike after the last bloom point in the spike. This is the node where the last bloom had appeared. The next node has a bud which didn't open. Between the last bloom node and this closed bud node, we need to cut the spike. After few days or say 1 or 2 weeks, a new spike will start to grow on the closed node.
If the phalaenopsis orchid is not in excellent health, then it is better not to grow another spike because this second spike will drain out more energy from the orchid. In such cases, it is good for the orchid to cut the spike totally so that the phalaenopsis orchid can direct the energy to grow new leaves and new roots.
