I started crankin on lake shasta recently after seeing the Mirrored minnow Tactical bassin baits you guys created. I have been using techniques i saw Matt Allen using on CL. It is paying dividends. I caught 7 fish in a short time one afternoon when the bite was slow even when i did not really have faith in cranking. I have 100 percent faith Now and i have one tied on at all times. Thanks for the great info always guys.!

Depends on bugdet but a good rule of thumb is if it is under 1/4 oz spinning combo is best

Got a box full of your guys tactical crank now. Has caught me more keepers on a lake this summer then anything that is notoriously tough to even catch one keeper in a tourney. I like to hit bottom with it then drag it along like a jig gets smacked.

Start cranking in the fall and winter. You’ll have a fun time. For me, it’s the most aggressive crankbait bites of the year. Caught my pb on medium diver in 30 degree water, dead middle of January, ice forming on the bank. My best day of fishing I’ve ever had was mid December in the same conditions, using a sexy shad squarebill.

I love the S-Crank 2.0. Gets down deeper than most squarebills and isn't so big that you're looking for a XXXH rod to throw it. For the biggest baits, I've found myself using a swimbait rod with a mod-fast action more often than not. The fact that most such rods are 8' or more doesn't hurt either.

I've heard you advice us multiple times about upgrading hooks on certain baits but never followed up. The day before this video was posted, I managed to land a 33" musky who bit into my brand new Rapala DT10 lure. He not only left two long scratches on the side but he managed to bend out two of the three hooks on the back treble hook. I'm now in the process of upgrading my hooks! Thanks for the great words of wisdom which have finally sunk in. In addition to your advice about fishing techniques and tackle, would you please provide some advice about how to get hooks out of fish with teeth (like musky and walleye) and also advice on how to free lures from the depths. I've seen you do something like plucking a guitar string but not sure what that's doing. Thanks for all these videos which are really helping me expand my fishing knowledge!

Not including lipless crank baits, I have three tackle boxes for crank baits. A) Deep crank baits which includes fat free shads in the 7 and 8 sizes. Also 5xd and 6xd. Each in a bright color, a shad color and a crawfish red brown. B) medium crank box which is mostly strike king 3 and 4s, and Bandit 8 and 12 foot divers, same colors as above, but also a set of red bandits. C) shallow which is old Mann’s loudmouth 3 which dive 3 feet, and Mann’s baby 1-minus. Mostly in chartreuse, white, baby bass, or ghost colors. These have worked so well I have each marked with dots, I keep track of the ones that are the best ones. Only the super fish catchers make it to the tournament boxes.

I like the video good job! For clarity though in the future when you designate a rod by a number like a 705 for example can you translate that to say maybe a seven foot medium action fast tip or whatever the designation really is. A lot of us don't know what the numbering system is for the rods that you cover. Just a suggestion to make it a little easier for those of us old school guys! The Mann’s 30+ and Magnum Hellbender were light years ahead of the DT series. They were out many years before we even had smart phones. I’m 59 and the Mag Hellbenders were on the market when I was a little kid. They run much deeper than 10’. We used to drive by the plant where the Hellbenders were made almost every weekend when we’d go visit my grandparents.

There were baits that ran deeper than 10 feet when the DT10 came out man- the DT series started in 2003- Bomber had been around for decades by that time, so had the Bandit, so had Manns, and the list goes on and on. Really man? You really thought the DT series was the first to reach 10 feet? Damn- guess I'm old but that seems ridiculous to me.

You know ppl give all the credit to the crankbait designs but, advancements in line, split rings, and hooks has done more for cranking than about anything else. It didn't matter how deep you designed a plug to go back when I was a kid cause we were throwing it on monofilament line only- usually using line that was to large for the application- so they would never get anywhere close to their rated depth. That's why ppl started inventing long lining and stuff like that- trying to find a way to get that plug down there while still using heavy enough line to land what was down there waiting for it- you hoped. Fluorocarbon changed everything, then we got belter split rings and hooks so we could actually land a few of the big bites we were getting. Remember the crappy cheapo hardware that cam eon the old bombers? Bronze colored split rings and hooks- you could bend the hooks with your bare hands. But we didn't have triple grips and all these fancy coated hooks and stuff. I remember the hook on the ole Arkie pitching jig was a bronze looking color to- they would corrode after a few trips hanging pork on them, putting them up wet. Didn't matter though- you always lost them long before that happened.

I've never been big on crankbaits but the square bill made me a believer yesterday. I was fishing a falling tide all afternoon and couldn't get a bite on a worm, jig, senko, or a spinnerbait. So I decided to just give a squarebill a shot and I ended up catching one on the 3rd cast and then the 4th cast back to back. I ended up catching fish back to back 3 times yesterday and landed probably 25 fish in the following 2 1/2 hours after I tied the crank on, not sure I'll be taking it off anytime soon lol.

Hey Tim, you ever have problems with the megabass s wave's clear coat bubbling up and flaking off? I've only used mine a few.times and caught 2 smaller bass and the paint job is peeling, sucks since its kind of expensive

Wooden crank baits are the only cranks. Old poes, bagleys, Norman’s Tennessee kiler and Rapala. Not paying top dollar for hard plastic.

Yes, historically that was the rule of thumb. We've been proving for years why 7:1 and 8:1 reels will get you more bites with crankbaits 👍🏼

The less sensitive comment I dont agree with. I saw a guy prove fluorocarbon was more sensitive than braid by even transferring bites on slack line back to your hand.

Slack line and tight line behave differently. With the line tight, the lack of stretch will mean that the braid transmits vibration better. With a slack line, density matters more. I can rig "demonstrations" to "prove" all kinds of things but that doesn't make them hold true under practical applications.
