“In everyone’s life there’s a summer of ’42.”
Summer of '42 is a 1971 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film based on the memoirs of screenwriter Herman Raucher. It tells the story of how Raucher, in his early teens on his 1942 summer vacation on Nantucket Island (off the coast of Cape Cod), embarks on a one-sided romance with a young woman, Dorothy, whose husband has gone off to fight in World War II.
The film was directed by Robert Mulligan, and starred Gary Grimes as Hermie, Jerry Houser as his best friend Oscy, Oliver Conant as their nerdy young friend Benjie, Jennifer O'Neill as the mysterious woman with whom Hermie becomes involved.
Nantucket Island was too far modernized in 1970 to be convincingly transformed to resemble an early 1940s resort, so production was taken to Mendocino, California, on the West Coast of the US.Shooting took place over eight weeks, during which O'Neill was sequestered from the three boys cast as "The Terrible Trio," in order to ensure that they did not become close and ruin the sense of awkwardness and distance that their characters felt towards Dorothy.
The movie earned an Academy Award - Original Dramatic Score - for Michel Legrand.

I had a Summer of '42 experience in my life when i was 18 years old. It was so beautiful and so very rewarding. I am 65 now, I always think about that event sometimes when I feel down. Best time of my life.

Siento no responderle en su idioma porque no lo conozco. Soy de España, mi edad es 68 años y tengo su misma opinión: la cara de Jennifer O'Neill, sobre todo en esta película, es la más bella que he visto en mi vida.

Thank you, Herve.. Classic all time favorites that stir so many memories. My summer of 42 was in 63, and yes, it changed my life forever. My lips are sealed and I will always cherrish the gift knowing taught me as a young man. Women were always the most precious of God's gift to me, but that has somehow changed.

Herman Raucher is 92 now and lives on the east coast . Several years ago I had the opportunity to correspond with him concerning finding the real Dorothy . The real Dorothy wrote him once with a postmark from Canton OH , and he knew from the things she said that it was her. There was no return address and she never wrote him again. Herman told me that some people tried to locate her for him but did not find her. In my conversations with Herman he felt that she did not want to be contacted so he let it go. I informed him I thought he was wrong and that the problem was he didn't try hard enough . I left this brief moment with Hermie walking away with the following impressions. That the movie was basically a true story and sadly that Herman did not want to really find her again for reasons I can't figure out. The real Dorothy if still alive would be around 98. If she has since died no family member who knows or knew her secret has come forth to date. This is sad since she is one of the most storied people in film making history.

Wow!! I had no idea the story I fell in love with at the age of 19 is true. Jennifer O'Neill, the love story, and the beautiful Seaside Village are all so perfect in my youthful memory. Today I am 71 years young, and like a lost dream, you have brought back my summer of 1971. Thank you for the beautiful cinematography and the comparison of the village both then and now. A masterpiece of a more innocent time and the coming of age. Canton, Ohio is one hour south of me. I had no idea Dorothy was so close.

Congratulations on superb work on Summer of '42 then and now. It was a poignant film then as now. A lot of bittersweet memories were revisited then and now for me almost 60 years later. They made fade, but your work recrystallize them. I loved the area of Mendocino and Ft. Bragg and always will. Things have changed, but such has life. Thanks for your fine craftsmanship in today's technology, Herve. I wish you well and much success.

Summer of love '71 Gotta admit I don't 'post' much but I've been waiting for this (video) for three years. Saw this film at the theater when I was 17. No movie 'spoke to me' as much as this film before or since. Great effort as I watched and shed a quiet tear to my own youth and remembrance of love lost that I'll never have again. Thank you Herve. Herve, tremendous work. Brilliant documentary. Inspirational and haunting as is the film. I haven’t seen the movie since I was 12 and it first appeared as a television premiere (I think ABC). I have never forgotten the end scene and the Dorthy voiceover. That 12 year old kid in me identified with Hermy for many reasons and I understood the final scene for what it is. The movie reminded me to embrace my youth as it was happening. I have tried to do this with my life. I will rewatch the movie. I stumbled over this excellent homage to the film because I purchased a Michel LeGrande album album today in a record store and started reviewing his work. Fantastic soundtrack.

The Summer of 42 was lived and written by Herman Raucher. I grew up in the fifties along with two younger brothers and like Herman Raucher’s book and film says, we were also, The terrible trio. I first saw the film at a drive-in, in Natick, Massachusetts in the 1960’s. the movie had a profound effect on me, and I quickly searched for and found Herman’s book as well. For me this author is my hero who launched my artistic energies. I paint and did an oil of, “Her house” which sold to a collector who lives on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I write as well but have never published any of my writing. I have watched the film dozens of times and read the book over and over. I’m a bit disappointed that this tribute, which was beautifully done, did not include the author, Herman Raucher’s name. I believe Herman is still living in his beloved Connecticut. His daughter Jenny was nice enough to answer my messages I have sent her about her Dad and his book’s and movies. I am seventy-one now and I will be watching the movie again very soon.

I saw the movie in 1971, then read the book. I was in my 20's. I felt it was a chapter of my past life. I thought the movie was filmed "Down East, " but it, in my minds' eye, was my hometown, a small fishing village on Floridas' north gulf coast. Even Dorothy's house and interior was similar to mine and others in our neighborhood. I was a soda jerk in a drug store and can relate to that part of the story. Earlier, my friends and I roamed the old waterfront, and even "raided" the Coast Guard Cutter. Always one of my favorite movies. Good memories.

Watched this film in 72/73 in a village cinema in Hale, Cheshire, U.K. An interlude half way through and a bar for a beer. It was like watching oneself going through emotions I recognised and I could resonate with it all. Yes a great film and soundtrack was perfect for this. I was 22 at the time and engaged to marry. I was away in a hotel all week as I was Territory rep for a chocolate company in the U.K. Yes it was a good time in my life. Now married 51 years and it all seems fresh in my mind as to how the guy felt over the girl.

Thank you so very much for posting this! I saw this movie when it was first released in the Fall of 1971 and in my first semester of college. I was 17 when I started college and had a huge crush on JENNIFER O'NEILL and wound up seeing every movie she made after this one. She was beautiful then and still is. This is a heart-tugging movie based on a real life event in the teen years of HERMAN RAUCHER. I have this movie and the soundtrack in my collection and this video that you posted brings me back to my late teens and some wistful memories of that time. Well done and thank you!
