To anyone that's thinking of posting "This is just Stranger Things with older kids" or some variation of that in the comments, a few items to note. First, Stranger Things is meant to be an homage to 1980s-era Spielberg films like E.T. And The Goonies, The Duffer Brothers have talked about that fact countless times, and it's also why it has so many references to films like that in it. Additionally, it's not by any means the first film or TV show to do that - see Super 8 or The Goldbergs as a few recent examples. Secondly, the directors of this film made another movie called Turbo Kid a few years back, which was also a throwback to 1980s movies, featuring a synthesizer score and retro production design. This new movie is their follow up. It makes you sound ignorant to call this a copy of Stranger Things, especially when Stranger Things is intentionally a copy of so many other productions before it. Now what you could say is something like "I enjoyed Stranger Things, so I'm betting I'll like this too", just don't insult a director or those involved by immediately calling something a "copy" of something else. At least do some research first.

This movie would not exist without Stranger Things.
@comichaul6 жыл бұрын
That's not the discussion though. Movies like Dreamcatcher, Super 8, Midnight Special, Under the Skin (which Stranger Things borrows heavily from on its visuals), Earth to Echo and more were all in production or made before Stranger Things. And again, the directors of this already made a film called Turbo Kid which intentionally looks and sounds like a 1980s film, and developed a cult following. For all we know they've been trying to make Summer of '84 for years now. Sure, the popularity of Stranger Things probably helps a film like this get more attention, but my point was to call it a "copy" or anything of the sort is ignorant. My point still stands.

Mark Walters Thank you its about time somebody said it, stranger things in reality is ripping off nearly every popular sci fi film from the 80's. Needless to say I'm still a fan but just because a film is set in the 80's with kids doesn't mean it always has to be compared I'm sure the filmmakers put alot of hard work and time to make this film and not to hear it being a ripoff of it or st

I honestly think the only reason people didn’t bash in on IT was because finn wolfhard was in it. directors can get inspiration from other movies yes, but this is a totally different plot line than ST or IT. I

Exactly S.T. just put the 80s back on the mainstream train but i really believe it was the movie Drive that really started pushing it back into the spotlight from its soundtrack even though its only 80s inspired music the 80s thing has been around for awhile just wasnt as popular a few years back.

"Matthew is a cop with a sick reputation". Hmmm-at first I was cringing at '90's slang being used in 1984. The first widely heard utterance of "sick" in skate/surf culture came in a 1987 skate video, "The Search for Animal Chin". However, that word wasn't in popular use as something cool or awesome until the mid to late 1990's during the highly televised X-Games. Now...Judah Lewis's character is described as quasi-punk, pseudo-delinquent. That being known, I guess I'll have to give the writers a pass since a punk-relevant article published in Rolling Stone Magazine in October of 1977 was titled, "A Report on the Sex Pistols-Rock is sick and living in London". The use of "sick" as a positive descriptive could have easily made its way into punk culture by 1984. My cringe stands corrected. And for all the people pissin' and moaning' about this movie ripping off "Stranger Things"...the Bowery Boys, East Side Kids, Hardy Boys, Scooby Doo, Goonies (to name a few), had no monopoly on young people's hijinks spilling over onto the malevolent schemes of serious criminals or killers. There actually is "NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN", to drag out a millennia-old adage from King Solomon. If you think something is unique and "original" think again. It has been done before in some form of media.
