Fabulous reading plans! Hyperion is already a classic. Pure big idea SF with literary flair and interesting stracture. Lonesome Dove swept me away; big book but I read it very quickly. Like you I’m typically a slow reader. I picked up in a used book store Never Let Me Go yesterday. Since I really enjoyed Klara I decided to read me from this acclaimed author. 😀 Happy Summer Reading!

I'll be starting The White-Luck Warrior after I finish my current read (Parable of the Sower). It was not easy to find a physical copy -- I'm glad you'll be able to help with pronunciations when we discuss it! I'm looking forward to Peril's Gate too, and I think August will work well to discuss it. And I am extremely excited for the discussion of Return to Edan at the end of this month! Thank you so much for organizing and hosting it, Johanna!

The Paper Menagerie is one of the best short story collections I've ever read and Philip sticks the landing in his trilogy (that was my favorite of the series). Hyperion and Lonesome Dove are both top 15 books of all time for me. Have a fantastic reading summer!

So that will be my first GGk read some time in the near future. I tried to read Remains of the Day. It was not for me. Great video!

Great reading plans! I sorely need to dive into Hyperion, but Wolfe comes first(I need to finish Sword & Citadel). Bakker I have seen him everywhere, but I'm not sure I can commit to another series right now. Peril's Gate, wow! I didn't know it was that huge! The Remains of the Day I had to google it, but I'll wait for your review, honestly. I love manga/anime, but I had had a hard time with Japanese books. Happy reading!

Edan! ❤️🤩 I will also be reading “A Brightness Long Ago” by Guy Gavriel Kay this Summer, as well as the "Prince of Nothing" Trilogy by R. Scott Bakker (It was unintentional, but the fact that I will be reading both «The Darkness That Comes Before» and «A Brightness Long Ago» this month, is indeed some ironic Canadian Ying & Yang…eh! 😄). Looking forward to hear your thoughts! 😃 Next on my Summer TBR, I have: The "Memory, Sorrow & Thorn" Trilogy by Ted Williams (Epic Fantasy, major inspiration for GRR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire") “All Tomorrow's Parties" by William Gibson (#3 in the "Bridge" Trilogy, Cyberpunk) "Tiamat's Wrath" & "Leviathan Falls" by James S.A. Corey (The final two novels in the "Expanse" Space Opera series) “The City” & “The Wall” by Adrian Goldsworthy (Historical Military Fiction set during the Campaigns of Roman Emperor Trajan and the construction of Hadrian’s Wall). On my Summer MBR/Early Fall TBR List I have “Lustrum" by Robert Harris (Book #2 in the "Cicero" Trilogy, Historical Fiction about the Roman Statesman) and “The Power Broker" by Robert Caro (a Classic of Investigative Journalism/Political Biographies). Also, I will get to the “Sun Eater” books by Christopher Ruocchio as soon I get my hands on them: Next up there for me, is “Demon in White” (#3)! Wish you a great Summer! 😊

Scoring the ‘right’ editions with the desired cover art is definitely a thing! I much preferred the US styling to “The Dandelion Dynasty” which got reprinted mid-release over here 🇬🇧 but I decided I couldn’t abide a mix ‘n’ match either, so 🇬🇧 editions it was.

I think you will like Hyperion and its blend of genres. I think its strengths are the characters, prose and themes. I hope you continue the series as I actually liked the plot progression and sci-fi concepts more in The Fall of Hyperion (although I am in the minority haha).

Those Aspects-Emperor are rough. I found mine at the used bookstore near me, so I got the hardcovers cheaper than the kindle editions but they are not prettying up my bookshelf. Your pronunciation of names in the series has been mostly spot on so I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. I have Lonesome Dove audio edtion on hold from the library but it's one of those things were it's at a 3+ month waitlist for it. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the books from thos tbr

The Remains of the Day is a true classic. Hyperion is really great (mostly). I don't love it like most people, certain parts really didn't hit for me, but other parts were so amazing. The short story structure really elevates it; a love letter to various sci-fi genres. I still need to read Lonesome Dove, Bakker, more GGK, Wurts.

Hi Johanna. I've only read the title story of "The Paper Menagerie" and I loved it! I didn't own the book at that time. I read it when it appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. My summer reading plans (always subject to mood) include my current read, The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson, a re-read of East of Eden by John Steinbeck, and finishing Don Quixote. Later this year I hope to finally read Hyperion and begin reading Book 1 of ASOIAF. Happy reading.

It's not often I'd recommend audio over physical, but if possible you should read Lonesome Dove on audio. Lee Horsley's narration is without a doubt my favourite performance of all time, and while I imagine the book would still be fantastic read physically, I think I was able to love it even more thanks to his narration. 10/10 experience. I'd also recommend Remains of the Day before Never Let Me Go but I guess it's just up to your preference on what grabs you more. All I'll say is don't judge Ishiguro solely on Never Let Me Go. I think it's far from his best.
