Got a tip from a lady growing lettuce in Florida in August years ago. Flavor was sweet and wonderful (not bitter). I tried it in Missouri in our August 100 degree heat. Had to keep it watered (used drip irrigation). Best lettuce I ever produced. Variety: Ermosa

I have ibc tote containers that I made into wicking beds and first time ever I grew butter lettuce and they thrived 3 plants out of the 6 thrived loved the constant access to water until our normal heat and dry weather kicked in. So this year, I’m in sw KS, we actually had a lot of rain (we’ve been in extreme drought basically no humidity for decades now hence why I went with wicking beds) and for whatever reason it was cool into June and humid on warm days and the butter lettuce thrived while everything else did nothing. But when the heat came around my butter lettuce started sprouting and growing tall not dense like it had and the awesome leaves became bitter and disgusting so big bummer and hoping to find a better variety for my area. I did have them growing in direct sunlight, again I’m new to all this. My tomatoes struggled to do much till the heat came back, even my zucchini and squash failed massively so I don’t know if they hated the containers which had plenty of room for them or because our season was so rainy and cool to start off with but then the damn squash bugs came probably a month ago and anyways not a good growing season in sw KS

@helicart

- try oakleaf varieties rather than heart varieties. they resist heat better. - keep them in partial shade most of the day. taller bushes or trees east and west , and 50-70% shadecloth. - they benefit from being sheltered from heavy rain too. so use hoops with 70% shadecloth until they are mature, and have plastic covers to protect from heavy rain. - make sure the hoops are high enough to allow good circulation i.e.at least 2 feet above lettuce. - drip irrigate for even moisture - mulch to keep soil moist - soil can be 50% compost, 25% sand, 25% garden soil - liquid fertilizer every 3-4 weeks.

I just saw that video posted by Curtis maybe 2 videos ago and was really impressed with his decision. I also recognize the "crab in a bucket" mentality that fuels posts like this because I'm experiencing this at work: "If I can't succeed and be someone significant, then I'm going to sabotage someone who is successful, because I'm shallow and it'll make me feel better about being a loser." Michael, please learn how to set goals, pursue dreams and get something done about yourself instead of being an embarrassing hater. People like Curtis, who are progressing the world, shouldn't waste their time with insecure people like you.
